Basel Week Miami ’12 / Upcoming: David Lynch “Silencio” Night Club @ The Delano

Those making it out to Basel Week Miami this year, make sure you stop by The Delano to check out David Lynch’s fictional club, the Silencio, reproduced in real life. If you recall, Club Silencio is the unusual nightclub of the same name in his 2001 film Mulholland Drive. Lynch has already created a replica in Paris by working on the interiors, including personally designing the furniture, but this will the first appearance for Basel. Check out these photos of the Paris site to give you an idea of what […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Preview: Jen Stark @ The Miami Project / Cooper Cole

Another thing to add to the list to visit next week during Basel Week Miami is the Cooper Cole booth at The Miami Project (which appears to be a new fair this year). Jen Stark, who showed with the Toronto gallery (covered) last year (as well as in Los Angeles recently), will be presenting two new holographic pedestals, a variation on her cut paper sculptures. It will be interesting to see these in person… Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Jen Stark here.

Basel Week Switzerland ’12: Haroshi for Jonathan LeVine Gallery (SCOPE)

Another booth to check out if you are lucky enough to be at Art Basel right now is the Jonathan LeVine setup at SCOPE. Japanese sculptor Haroshi has contributed three pairs of transparent shoes, fitted with feet sculpted from skateboards, a signature touch. Others who will be showing include Alex Gross, Brett Amory, Dylan Egon, Faile, Henrik Uldalen, How & Nosm, Jim Houser, Jordan Nickel (Pose), Marco Mazzoni, Natalia Fabia, Nicoletta Ceccoli, REVOK, Sit, Souther Salazar, Tara McPherson, Victor Castillo and Shepard Fairey. Basel Week Miami ’11: Jason Shawn Alexander – “Undertow” @ 101/exhibit

Among the abundance of standalone exhibitions that AM attended during Art Basel Week Miami, one that stood out was Jason Shawn Alexander’s showing at 101/exhibit. Undertow came highly recommended by our friends at Hi-Fructose, and when we made it to the opening we could see why. The LA-based artist’s figurative work was large-scale, gritty, full of emotion & raw energy, and is certainly something you should check out if you are in the area through February 8th. More photos from the opening after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

Now that Art Basel Week Miami has passed for another year, we’ve had a chance to catch our breath a little. We still have more to share with you though like Marcel Dzama’s work at the David Zwirner booth at the main fair. Taking center stage was this inset intricately conceived diorama featuring the NY-based artist’s sculptural skills and sense of theater. More photos of his other work for the booth after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: ROA

Other than the collaboration with Eine, the ever hustling ROA also found time for other projects while in town for Art Basel Week (like the wall you see above). We are always fascinated by the ways the Belgium-based street painter works in unique architectural quirks into his milieu of anatomized animal murals. This piece above is no different with this marine friend of his chopped in half by a wall element with some copious drips emphasizing the point. More detailed photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: RISK

Not content to let his MSK brothers (RETNA, RIME) have all the fun, the LA-based RISK also made the trip to Miami for Art Basel Week. Using his unique skills over several days, the influential writer got up this abstract and multicolored gem for his fans in South Florida to enjoy. Thankfully, photographer Koshin Finley was on hand to document everything with his lens. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Do Ho Suh @ Lehmann Maupin

Another artist whose work caught our eye during Art Basel Week Miami was Do Ho Suh’s creations for Lehmann Maupin at the main fair. Like his showing at the NY gallery back in September (covered), the Korean sculptor and installation artist brought some captivating household items created from translucent fabric that attracted many fair-goers to examine their ethereal details up close. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: FriendsWithYou

During our sojourn into the art extravaganza in Miami known as Art Basel Week, we were happy to be able to visit the artistic duo FriendsWithYou in their home base, office, and gallery space in the Design District. The exhibition consisted of new work created especially for this annual influx of art fans and collectors, as well as some of the work that they displayed at The Hole Gallery back in June (covered). More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Rubell Family Collection

One of the most prestigious private showings at Art Basel Miami Week every year is from the Rubell Family Collection. This year, the group show culled from their extensive holdings was entitled American Exuberance, a reference to the fact that all artists included were American citizens and living in the States leading to a keen observation of American culture, economy and politics. On the roster were 64 artists and 190 artworks, 40 of which were made in 2011, many specifically for this exhibition and included […]
