Basel Week Miami ’12: Matthew Marks Gallery @ Art Basel

The only thing you need to know about Matthew Marks Gallery is that it represents Jasper Johns, (arguably) the greatest living artist in the world. Looking further, you will see that the gallery also represents other top artists as well. Its booth at Art Basel this year includes an orange, two-panel painting by Ellsworth Kelly, new sculptures by Charles Ray and Katharina Fritsch, three recent paintings by Paul Sietsema, new sculptures by Darren Almond, as well as pieces by Willem de Kooning, Luigi Ghirri, Thomas Demand, […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Miami – Highlights

One of the mainstay satellite fairs in Miami was Art Miami. As previously seen in our coverage of their offshoot fair CONTEXT where pieces purported to be street works from Banksy (not authenticated from PC though), this combined pair of fairs was a feast for the eyes. Numerous mediums were on display – not only classic paintings, but sculptures, installations & photographs galore. With dealers and galleries showing side by side, this fair had a wide range of artists in varying stages of career development. From […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: White Cube @ Art Basel

Already one of the biggest contemporary art galleries in London, White Cube now has the distinction of being Damien Hirst’s only representative gallery after the artist infamously left Gagosian Gallery. With an showing featuring artwork by Hirst, Tracey Emin, Zhang Huan, Christian Marclay, and emerging stud artist Theaster Gates, White Cube offered visual treats for any art lover visiting its Art Basel Miami Beach booth. See their pieces, as well as work by others here… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: Team Gallery @ Art Basel

Each year at Art Basel Miami Beach, Team Gallery exhibits a collection of some of the most exciting young(er) artists at the fair with work that well represents each one’s respective practice. You can depend on Team to showcase Ryan McGinley, one of its biggest stars, with a couple of breathtaking works at their booth. Other standouts include Banks Violette, Cory Arcangel, and Gert & Uwe Tobias. See images of the pieces below… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: Invader @ Jonathan LeVine / PULSE

As we wandered the halls of the PULSE art fair (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami, we came upon the booth of Jonathan LeVine solely featuring the work of Invader. After seeing his work up and about town, we now had a chance to see some of the French artist’s tiled creations up close. Also present was the balloon contraption that allowed him to get his signature character up in space earlier this year (covered). While in Florida, the street artist also hosted a screening for […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Ambach & Rice @ NADA

Hailing from Los Angeles and formerly of Seattle, Ambach & Rice’s booth at NADA (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami featured two mid-sized drawings by Eric Yahnker from his Long-Banged Lady series and a large-scale piece called The Good Samaritan. The booth also featured sculptures by Ron van der Ende and Karen Sargsyan. See images of them below… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: Almine Rech Gallery @ Art Basel

With a popular Jeff Koons exhibit at their Brussels gallery just recently coming to a close, Almine Rech arrived at Art Basel Miami Beach exhibiting a good mix of the young (Alex Israel, who also had a show at the gallery last month), established mid-career (Taryn Simon, Ugo Rondinone) and iconic (Ed Ruscha). Its booth had something interesting for everyone to view and a nice selection for almost every level of collector.  Check out the images of the artwork Almine Rech had out on display… […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Merry Karnowsky @ CONTEXT Art Miami

As we strolled through the new CONTEXT Art Miami (highlights here), one of the booths that drew us in featured artists diplayed by the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Included in this particular showing were works from artists we have mentioned here at AM before like Deedee Cheriel, Mark Whalen, Kent Williams, and Greg Simkins. Basel Week Miami ’12: David Kordansky Gallery @ Art Basel

One of the galleries with the best and largest stables of  young artists that every collector keeps an eye out for every year at Art Basel Miami Beach is David Kordansky Gallery.  The Culver City, CA stalwart represented Los Angeles’ talked-about art scene to the fullest with great pieces by such coveted artists as Aaron Curry, Kathryn Andrews, Valentin Carron, and Mai-Thu Perret.  Andrews actually has a solo exhibition opening soon at the gallery, so this was a nice taste of things to come.  See […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: PULSE – Highlights

Another strong fair we visited while we were enjoying Basel Week Miami was PULSE. Featuring many galleries and artists that we were familiar with, it was a nice stroll catching up with them as well as learning about some new artists. Here is an overview of what we saw, including these sculptures from Mark Mulroney (seen above), before we take you on some closer in-depth looks at some of the booths. Discuss Basel Week Miami here.
