Releases: James Jean’s “Kindling” Book – San Diego Comic-Con

A limited number of advance copies of James Jean’s (interviewed) book featuring work from his NYC solo show will be released at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Published by Chronicle Books, “Kindling” presents 12 of James’ visual mix of abstract and illustrative works from the show, along with his detailed preliminary sketch for the work on the reverse side, printed in a removable large poster format. A pretty epic customs show is opening on July 11th at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. AM dropped by Gallery 1988 LA this past Saturday and met up with our friend Greg “Craola” Simkins. Greg spent the afternoon treating everyone to live painting (previewed). AM had the pleasure of interviewing Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper as they celebrated the launch of their amazing book “Subway Art: 25th Anniversary” at Black Rat PressÂ (covered). Â Despite an initial print run of just a few thousand back in 1984, “Subway Art” has become a true phenomenon with countless reprints that have inspired thousands of artists and fans around the world. Releases: David Choe – “Jimi Hendrix” Print

What’s with all the great limited edition releases recently? Here is David Choe holding up an epic print (his largest ever) of his Jimi Hendrix painting. Limited to 27 (also Hendrix’s age at death) and sized at 44″ x 51 5/8″, the print was priced at $600. Unfortunately, it already sold out before Choe even got the post up on his blog.

Take a look at this intricate new laser-engraved skate deck design from Greg Simkins. The “Lonely Knight” wood decks, limited to 25, priced at $325 will be released this Saturday, June 27th (12 – 4 pm) at Gallery 1988 LA.
