Preview: Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction

Fifteen years is a long time. For a magazine & brand that pioneered coverage of art that nobody else wanted to cover, Juxtapoz has come a long way. Humble websites like ours probably would not be around if not for their efforts to expose our generation to artists who otherwise would not have gotten any publicity. So imagine what a treasure trove of works they will be able to come up with for a 15th Anniversary Auction. We are salivating just thinking about it. The […]

Auction: Polaroid Collection via Sotheby’s

Now that the Polaroid Corporation has gone into bankruptcy, it leaves behind a legacy not only in your fond childhood memories of snapping away your day’s activities without a care, but also in an important collection of instant photographs by some of the best artists of the 20th century.  In an effort to raise money to pay their creditors, that collection will soon head into auction courtesy of Sotheby’s, with the remaining pieces to be sold via private sales. Read more after the jump…

Charity: Craola x American Cancer Society Auction

For those curious about the piece that Greg “Craola” Simkins (interviewed) was working on at his skatedeck/livepainting event at Gallery 1988 LA (covered) in June, AM has an update for you. The 36″ x 24″ finished piece entitled “The Good Soul” will be auctioned off via Ebay with all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of Jensen’s (owner of g1988) late father, and huge Greg Simkins fan, Lawrence Karp. A couple more images after the jump.

Auctions: Day & Evening Sales @ Christie’s (London)

AM took a look at Christie’s Summer Post-War and Contemporary Art auctions, taking place tonight, June 30, and tomorrow, July 1, and found a few pieces we would love to put in our collection. Thank goodness more and more auction houses are using the term “Post-War” for what is no longer “Contemporary” art. Let’s hope the galleries and art fairs start to do the same. Our favorite lots from ths auction include Liu Ye’s “Red I” (Lot #2) seen above, estimated at $246,000 – $328,000. […]

Art Focus/Video: Cory Arcangel

Cory Arcangel recently had his first auction sale on June 4 at Wright in Chicago.  The piece, a 15-minute movie titled “Super Mario Movie“ (part 1 seen above), is a hacked and reprogrammed video game cartridge that follows the game’s hero as he travels through a corrupted game universe and questions his own existence as his world gradually falls apart.  Deitch Projects where the video was first shown) director Kathy Grayson refers to it as “the most dynamic piece of new media art in [her] […]

Update: Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Sale Results

Yesterday’s Contemporary Day Sale (previewed) at Sotheby’s in London only had a few lots that AM was closely watching, but the results are a good sign for the overall market. In particular, Faile received a much needed boost with their large canvas “New York City 02” (Lot # 169) selling right in the middle of the estimate for 49,250 GBP and the smaller “NYC Butterfly Girl” on wood (Lot # 168) selling for 16,250 GBP, well over the 12,000 GBP high estimate. Faile has not […]

Auctions: “Vision 21” @ Bonhams London

AM continues to look at the upcoming auctions with a review of the July 1st Vision 21 auction at Bonhams in London. Generally a grab bag of post war and contemporary art and design items, the auction is of particular interest to us this season as Bonhams has stuck a small selection of “Urban Art” in the back of the catalog. There is also a nice little Murakami sculpture that would be fun to own, some cool mid-century furniture and Warhol prints. Seems like it […]

Preview: Phillips de Pury Contemporary Art Evening Sale

Phillips de Pury has published the catalog for their upcoming London Contemporary Art Evening Sale and there are a few pieces AM would love to see in our collection. Of most significance is the inclusion of a classic montage piece by Barry McGee. McGee has traditionally not performed very well at auction, but long term, we all know he is one of the most important American artists working today and his inclusion in an evening art sale is a real testament to this. It’s worth […]

Openings: Poketo Benefit and Art Auction – “F%#K Cancer! We Love Justin.”

AM was in attendance at the “F%#k Cancer! We Love Justin” silent art auction held at Poketo studios. You may not recognize Justin VanHoy’s name, but you’ve undoubtedly seen the work he’s done as art director of Swindle and his contributions to Obey Clothing, Cobra Snake and Wired Magazine. All proceeds from the event went directly to support Justin’s recovery from a successful bone marrow transplant after a relapse of lukemia. The big contributor of the evening was Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Paul Weitz, who went […]

Street Art Shows Strong @ Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction

We heard a rumor that the economy is not well and the art market is hurting. Apparently, the folks attending Sotheby’s Contemporary Day auction don’t agree. Today’s sale yielded solid results, with 337 lots pulling in over 21.5 million USD. Among the amazing lineup of artists, such as Warhol, Basquiat, Kippenberger and Cy Twombly, AM noted the inclusion of two iconic names from the “Urban Art” genre: Shepard Fairey and Banksy.
