Basel Week Miami ’19 / Recap: Art Basel

Earlier this week, the 18th edition of Art Basel Miami opened at the Miami Beach Convention Center with 269 galleries, offering artwork by mostly blue chip artists from around the world. Drawing visitors in for the beautiful (albeit chillier than usual this year) weather and gathering of friends and associates, an almost unending selection of paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film, video, and digital art greeted their eyes (and wallets) as they perused the main fair. Highlights for us included this Austin Lee sculpture (seen above) at the Peres Projects […]

Openings: Austin Lee – “Feels Good” @ Deitch Projects (New York)

Currently in New York, Deitch Projects has a show on view from Austin Lee featuring a series of paintings and sculptures. Entitled Feels Good, the new work continues the locally-based artist’s practice of combining both digital (including VR) and traditional techniques to create luminous candy-colored paintings and distinctive distorted sculptures. The upper level of the SoHO space is dedicated to a selection of new portraits that he paints from life with an airbrush – of visitors to his studio during the past several years. As referenced by the title of the […]

Studio Visits: Austin Lee – “Feels Good” @ Deitch Projects (New York)

New York will have another show to look forward to next weekend (March 9th) when Austin Lee opens a solo entitled Feels Good at Deitch Projects in New York. Fusing digital techniques with traditional painting, the locally-based artist has prepared a series of large pieces, many of them with his signature blur effect. Along with these works, he has also included some of his distinctive sculptural forms as well as a group of new portraits that he paints from life with an airbrush – from visitors to his […]

As the large crowds swarm into the Convention & Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong, we’re bringing you the 2nd part of our report from Art Basel Hong Kong 2018. Focusing on the Level 1 hall where some of the biggest galleries such as Gagosian, Blum & Poe, Pace, White Cube, Spruth Magers, David Zwirner, Lisson or Perrotin had their presentations, this floor was packed with some stellar works by some of the most important living artists. David Zwirner included a flashy collection of five recent works by Jeff Koons along […]

Showing: Austin Lee – “Serious Works” @ Kaikai Kiki Gallery

On March 3rd, Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Motoazabu, Tokyo, opened a debut Japan solo exhibition by American artist Austin Lee. Serious Works is sort of a parody title for a show that consists of paintings and sculptures done in Lee’s colorful, naive style. For this showcase, the NYC-based artist created an extensive installation within the gallery space. His large animal mural and chess board floor pattern make an eclectic environment in which his playful and poppy imagery feels at home and well presented. His sculptural piece titled Duo, a bubble gum-like […]

Showing: “Appropriate Disruption” @ Jacob Lewis Gallery

On November 21, Appropriate Disruption opened at Jacob Lewis Gallery in New York. The show revolves around a theme of appropriation and features the intricate works of Rina Banerjee, Reza Farkhondeh, the always incredible How and Nosm, Austin Lee, Erik Parker, Emilio Perez and the infamous, Kenny Scharf (seen above). The works will be on view until Saturday, December 20 so if you hurry, you can still catch it.

Showing: “Positivilly Marvillainous” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton is currently hosting the Positivilly Marvillainous group show, a title borrowed from the smart word play of George Herriman, the creator of the Krazy Kat comic. The power of comics and cartoons, and the way they represent characters and tell the story is the main theme of the show. The idea that “still, simple and sophisticated characters tell our stories better than a complicated plot,” resulted in an exhibition that champion the character itself. The show features works by established and up and […]
