Armory Week ’10: The Armory Show

Undoubtedly, you all have been waiting for more Armory Week ’10 coverage, and we apologize for the delay, but after nearly a week of visually-overloaded days and late nights, we had to take a break before getting to it. But now, without any further ado… In the end, we hit six fairs, including Pulse, Scope and Volta. The main attraction, of course, was The Armory Show, which was housed on two piers on Manhattan’s West side. Pier 92 focused on modern art (generally, the super […]

Openings: Manifest Equality – Los Angeles

Manifest Equality (previewed), the latest brainchild of the good people who brought us the Manifest Hope shows (covered), opened this week in the trendy Hollywood and Vine area of Los Angeles.  Featuring a full lineup of some of our favorite artists, Manifest Equality has successfully created another well curated and ambitious show, this time around focusing on the themes of Equality, Justice, Civil Rights, Respect, Unity and Love. With artworks donated by such artists as Barry McGee, Swoon, Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Gary Baseman, Clare […]

Armory Week ’10: First Look at The Armory Show

We had a chance to take a first look at this year’s enormous Armory Show, which officially opened in NYC yesterday. After spending most of the afternoon, we still felt like we had rushed through the contemporary half of the fair shown on Pier 94, and we didn’t even get to Pier 92, the other half which focuses on modern art. We will definitely be going back over the next few days to make sure to give you full coverage. But until then, take a […]

Preview: Manifest Equality – Pop Up Show

Some of you may remember our coverage from DC during inauguration week where Shepard Fairey sponsored a pop up show called Manifest Hope. The show was a roaring success drawing together artists from across the nation in their support of the Obama campaign and it’s creation of “Hope.” Now, the show has transitioned to a new theme of equality and it’s next stop is Los Angeles. Manifest Equality enlists another stellar group of artist such as Barry McGee, El Mac, Clare Rojas, Gary Baseman, Tim […]

Preview: Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening & Day Sales

AM took a close look at the upcoming Post-War and Contemporary Art auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips de Pury in London this February and found a lot of work worth highlighting (as well as some that are definitely worth bidding on if you have the means). First up, we show you the best of Christie’s Post War and Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 11-12), including interesting works by Hernan Bas, Banksy, Zhang Huan, Terence Koh, Barry McGee, Richard Prince (above), Yoshitomo Nara, […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMoMA – A Closer Look

After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed).  Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works.  Arranged in a seemingly haphazard, though obviously well thought out manner, Twist’s install was literally bulging at the seams, seemingly so that one would assume it was on the cusp of giving birth or expelling a whole new body of […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMOMA 75th Anniversary Exhibiton

We recently took you to Mike Shine’s studio where he was getting ready for this weekend’s show at SFMOMA, but he’s not the only artist who was working on an exhibition there. Barry McGee was also installing some works in preparation for the 75th anniversary show at SFMOMA, where they have championed Mission School artists like Mr. Twist over the years.  Other artists featured include Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Frida Kahlo, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Mike Mandel, Larry Sultan, Jackson Pollock, Leslie Shows and more. […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee Installation @ Deitch

Amongst the many things we’ve seen over in Miami this year, perhaps the most talked about piece of work (certainly between the AM crew and our friends out here) was an previously unsold Barry McGee’s “99 bottle” installation over at Deitch Projects booth at Art Basel. Reputed to have sold for a mere 100K at this year’s fair, it would not have been hard, just among collector friends in Miami to come up with the money and then to split the bottles up. Perhaps not […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee – Wynwood Walls Mural

After opening his epic show last month at PRISM, Barry McGee moved on to Art Basel for his next project. For his Wynwood Walls installation, McGee covered an entire building with his signature geometric patterns, left plenty of tags, trademark imagery, and threw in an overturned car as well, smoke machine and all.  AM spent some time salivating over the details on the site all the while documenting everything to share with you! More images after the jump…

Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – OHWOW Gallery

To kick off Art Basel, Miami staple OHWOW Gallery opened two ambitious shows last night – the group effort “It Ain’t Fair 2009” as well as David Lynch, Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse’s “Dark Night of the Soul.” With heavy hitters such as Kaws, Barry McGee and Jose Parla, combined with David Lynch’s photography and Danger Mouse’s music, OHWOW has further cemented themselves as the leaders in the Miami art scene.
