We had a chance to take a first look at this year’s enormous Armory Show, which officially opened in NYC yesterday. After spending most of the afternoon, we still felt like we had rushed through the contemporary half of the fair shown on Pier 94, and we didn’t even get to Pier 92, the other half which focuses on modern art. After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed). Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works. We recently took you to Mike Shine’s studio where he was getting ready for this weekend’s show at SFMOMA, but he’s not the only artist who was working on an exhibition there. Amongst the many things we’ve seen over in Miami this year, perhaps the most talked about piece of work (certainly between the AM crew and our friends out here) was an previously unsold Barry McGee’s “99 bottle” installation over at Deitch Projects booth at Art Basel. Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee – Wynwood Walls Mural

After opening his epic show last month at PRISM, Barry McGee moved on to Art Basel for his next project. For his Wynwood Walls installation, McGee covered an entire building with his signature geometric patterns, left plenty of tags, trademark imagery, and threw in an overturned car as well, smoke machine and all. Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – OHWOW Gallery

To kick off Art Basel, Miami staple OHWOW Gallery opened two ambitious shows last night – the group effort “It Ain’t Fair 2009” as well as David Lynch, Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse’s “Dark Night of the Soul.” With heavy hitters such as Kaws, Barry McGee and Jose Parla, combined with David Lynch’s photography and Danger Mouse’s music, OHWOW has further cemented themselves as the leaders in the Miami art scene.
