Openings: Steve Powers / Barry McGee / Todd James – “Contemporaries” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida (Milan)

A couple weeks ago, Patricia Armocida Gallery opened a group show curated by Steve Powers (aka ESPO) at their Milan location. For Contemporaries, the venerable Philadelphia-based street artist hand selected ten artists from both the East and West Coasts of the United States, balancing the artistic dialogue between the old school and the new school generations. Of course, taking center stage were Barry McGee (aka TWIST), Todd James (aka REAS), and ESPO himself, the trio being longtime friends and collaborators perhaps best known for their [...]

Streets: TWIST & AMAZE (Sydney)

After stopping off in Venice for the opening of his latest solo show, Barry McGee (aka TWIST) appears to have continued his world travels abroad by heading down to Australia with long time friend and cohort Josh Lazcano (aka AMAZE). In a nod to arguably their most iconic collaborative mural composition, last seen at the famed Houston & Bowery wall last summer, the THR (The Human Race) crew members went big and bold in the Central Business District of Sydney. The minimalism of the mural, with [...]

Showing: Barry McGee @ Workshop Arte Contemporanea (Venice)

Slipping quietly under the radar in the wake of his impressive exhibition in London back in July, Barry McGee unveiled another new body of work just a short distance away from the UK this past weekend. Perhaps making up for lost time abroad, Workshop Arte Contemporanea this time plays host in Venice, Italy, where a wide range of Barry’s signature “clusters” are on display. Constructed of acrylic-painted panels and incorporating geometric patterns, typography, portraiture, the odd household cleaner (ie. Clorox), as well as some composed [...]

Openings: Barry McGee @ Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London

AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. This was the case with the 2010 joint show with Danish artist HuskMitNavn at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels, and the 2009 three-man show (which also included Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon) curated by Aaron Rose at Berlin’s Circleculture Gallery. However, the last time McGee exhibited in the UK was [...]

Teaser: Barry McGee – “New Work” @ Modern Art (London)

Londoners, get ready to throw your TWIST’s up in the air. Legendary graf and street artist Barry McGee will be hitting up the UK with a new show this coming Thursday, June 30th, at Stuart Shave / Modern Art. If his fantastic installation and exhibition, Easy Tonto, held there in 2005 is any indication, fans in England who have been looking across the pond in envy at the MOCA McGee, ESPO, and REAS Street Market will be in for a treat. More views of the 2005 exhibition after [...]

Openings: “Margaret Kilgallen: Summer / Selections” @ Ratio 3

Opening to a packed crowd last night, Ratio 3 honored the memory of Margaret Kilgallen (1967-2001) with her first solo exhibition in San Francisco in 13 years. Along with her husband Barry McGee and other artists, the art movement now commonly referred to as the Mission School (which drew inspiration from the urban culture of San Francisco’s Mission District as well as comic, folk and graffiti art) has been a huge influence to the Street Art that we know of today. Kilgallen’s work is now [...]

Openings: “Let’s Go Bombing Tonight” @ V1 Gallery

After telling you about an upcoming show curated by KAWS and Erik Parker, we now bring your pics of another artist curated show in Copenhagen. Let’s Go Bombing Tonight at the V1 Gallery was put together under the vision of Barry McGee and Josh Lazcano (AMAZE) and features a lineup of their friends and associates. Of course, included in the show are Barry and his wife’s alteregos Lydia Fong and Peggy Honeywell. More photos taken for AM by Henrik Haven after the jump…

Focus: Street Market – Barry McGee, Steve Powers, Todd James – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As part of the MoCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition (covered), Todd James (aka REAS), Barry McGee (aka Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, Robert Pimple, Twist) and Steve Powers (aka ESPO) reunited to re-envision their legendary 2000 Street Market installation at Deitch Projects, which itself was a recreation of the trio’s Indelible Market at the Philadelphia ICA earlier that year. Although the installation is always different, the idea remains the same: an urban environment—complete with stores, streets and all—that reflects the artists’ idea of a hyper-real [...]

Openings: “Facemaker” @ Royal/T

Facemaker opened at Royal/T last Wednesday, curated by Kathy Grayson, director of The Hole NYC and former director of the Deitch Projects. Just in time for Art in the Streets, the eclectic Culver City art space has teamed up with the New York gallery to put on a street-pop frenzy, displaying a playful amalgam of colorful imagery centered on different interpretations of the face. With street artists Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, KAWS, and SWOON on the roster, alongside Clare Rojas, FriendsWithYou, Ben Jones, [...]
