A couple Saturdays ago, the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction opened at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. As we previewed a couple weeks back, curators, The Future Tense, brought together an impressive roster of 30 emerging and established artists in the contemporary and urban/street art genres – including such big names as Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Harland Miller, Faile, Russell Young and Tracey Emin – to commemorate 30 years of AIDS research. Last Friday evening, Spoke Art Gallery hosted the opening of Sink or Swim (previewed), a benefit for the Japan-based grass roots organization PangeaSeed, whose goal is to raise international awareness on the plight of sharks. The show included literature, photos, artwork and members of PangeaSeed creating a dialogue as to why we must preserve and protect sharks and their habitat. AM recently attended the annual RxArt benefit gala. The non-profit organization dedicated to placing original fine art (see Jeff Koons) in patient and examination rooms of hospitals have long garnered the staunch support from some other big names in art such as Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Yoshitomo Nara, Marilyn Minter and Ed Ruscha. Tomorrow night, September 23rd, marks the opening of the Sink or Swim benefit show for PangeaSeed, a grassroots organization based in Japan dedicated to educating and raising international awareness on the plight of sharks and the destruction of their habitat. This weekend, the Giant Robot 2 gallery in West LA will be hosting a benefit show featuring some artists that we have covered before here on AM like Edwin Ushiro whose piece you see above. AM recently attended the star studded charity art show Made In Polaroid held at Phillips de Pury. The benefit was a one night auction that featured 50 works created by the 50-50-50 project using Polaroid’s mobile printer. All proceeds went to support Free Arts NYC. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be holding a benefit art auction and exhibition entitled RE:DEFINE to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus. We all hit bumps in the road, but with a little help we can all overcome any obstacles. As mentioned previously, a good friend of AM and assistant director of Joshua Liner Gallery, Tim Strazza, was unfortunately diagnosed with a Multiple Sclerosis. We helped sponsor a fundraiser created by the gallery to generate funds that went to support Tim and his medical bills.
