Interviews/Preview: Dan Baldwin – “Disillusion” @ Carmichael Gallery

Over the past few years Dan Baldwin has established himself as one of the notable artists in the UK’s new contemporary art scene. A distinct voice in a landscape full of artists whose works are often too similar to distinguish, Dan has proven himself to be fresh and somewhat unique. It’s great to see him traveling to the US for his first solo exhibition, “Disillusion,” opening Thursday, September 10 at Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles. Opening alongside Guy Denning’s “Celebrity Will Eat Itself” show at the Carmichael Gallery is “A Mirror Distorted” (previewed) featuring work from four unique female voices. South African transplant Candice Tripp (interviewed) continues to impress us with her wit and great use of white space, while Pam Glew displays her unique “flag” works which were created utilizing a special bleach and ink technique. Working with oils, Denning presents a series of dark and powerful pieces compounded of raw emotion that exposes the uncertainty and insecurities of his ambiguous celebrity subjects. The power of these pieces is further highlighted by the textures and painterly technique he employs. Detailed photos of the work and pics from the opening after the jump.

We weren’t sure what to expect when we first got wind of EINE’s Los Angeles solo debut, “The A – Z of Change,” (teased) opening July 9th at Carmichael Gallery, but we are seriously impressed with what he’s delivered.  For this latest body of work on canvas, EINE used a combination of silkscreen and hand-spray techniques to create vibrant pieces containing powerful imagery of individuals standing up against the status quo, a message all too appropriate in today’s times given the unstable political climate in various countries around the globe. We can’t wait to see the entire […]
