Openings: Chris Johanson – “Alright Alright” @ Malmö Konsthall

This past weekend, Chris Johanson opened his massive retrospective at Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. Organized by Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Alright Alright (previewed) presents an extensive collection of large scale paintings, smaller works on paper, and mixed-media sculptures from the Portland-based artist, collectively exploring such existential issues as “self-delusion, alienation, deceit, and monotony”. The installation of the work was particular unique, displayed on rustic easels within the open layout of the venue for attendees to weave in and out of and interact with on a more intimate […]

Previews: Chris Johanson – “Alright Alright” @ Malmö Konsthall (Sweden)

Portland-based contemporary artist Chris Johnason is set to open a retrospective exhibition with Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. Hailing from the influential Mission School art movement that sprung up in San Francisco during the mid-1990’s, as well as featured prominently in the Beautiful Losers museum exhibition in 2005 and subsequent documentary film that helped to shine a light on the trailblazing collective of artists, Alright Alright showcases a wide arc of Johanson’s artistic career. Through a selection of old and new paintings, drawings, and installations, the […]

Preview: Saturday @ Phillips NYC

Last night, Phillips De Pury in New York City held a special preview of the lots from their Saturday sale coming up this weekend. AM loves Saturday @ Phillips because of its increased accessibility compared with other higher-end contemporary auctions, which are typically held on mid-week afternoons and evenings, making them difficult for most working people to attend. In addition, Phillips Saturday sales are known for a wide range of items, including a great selection of urban, street and other emerging art, as well as […]

Openings: 15 Years of New Image Art

Last night’s opening for “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed here and here) reaffirmed why New Image Art is one of the primary driving forces in the alternative/low-brow/street art scene. The show was everything we thought it would be and more – great art, an energetic crowd, and non-stop entertainment. AM congratulates Marsea Goldberg and the entire New Image Art team on an amazing fifteen years! See all the artwork and photos from the opening after the jump.

Setup: 15 Years of New Image Art

Tonight marks the opening of New Image Art’s anniversary show “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed). AM swung by the gallery yesterday to check out the progress of the installation. While we were there, Judith Supine was putting on the finishing touches to his 18’x16′ kinetic sculpture and Neck Face was customizing a motorcycle in his uniquely raw style. In you’re in Los Angeles, don’t miss this milestone event! There are amazing pieces on hand from such notables as Aiko, Anthony Lister, Antonio Diaz, […]
