Last week, AM decided stroll by 111 Minna Gallery to check out David Choong Lee’s latest effort, Organic Updates (previewed), which features a series of large clusters consisting of wood panels of painting, graffiti and collage, that are arranged to give the work a massive organic feel. I forgot to ask if purchase comes with a diagram for installation (maybe David is willing to consult via Skype). Check out photos from opening night below… definitely recommended to view in person while it’s still up! Discuss […]

Previews: Alexandros Vasmoulakis – “Figures” @ LeBasse Projects

In a couple hours, the LeBasse Projects in Culver City will open their doors for the opening of Alexandros Vasmoulakis’ solo show entitled Figures. On display will be the Greek artist’s form of loose portraiture, rendered in thick textural strokes and bright colors. Although the initial expressions seen are smiling, when looking at the paintings for a longer period of time, a viewer gets the sense that the subjects may be overdoing their looks of joy and may actually be laughing to hide their pain. Discuss this […]

Showing: Dan Witz – “Prisoners 2012 – 2013” @ Lazarides (Rathbone)

Late last month, the Lazarides’ Rathbone Place in London hosted Dan Witz’s solo debut with the gallery with a show entitled Prisoners 2012 – 2013. As the title suggests, the new body of work was mainly focused on a series where the NY-based artist partnered with Amnesty International, the world’s largest human rights organization, to create works featuring individuals who are subjects of their campaign for rights awareness. These combined with the lighting in the space made for a dramatic setting. These paintings were joined by some […]

Upcoming: Charmaine Olivia – “Muses” @ Shooting Gallery

This Saturday (February 9th), Charmaine Olivia will be opening her new show at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Entitled Muses, the exhibition will be a followup to her showing there in 2012 (covered) and will feature oil paintings focused on feminine beauty. The colorful new body of work is more passionate exploration of portraiture than previous shows.  She states – “Each painting was inspired by an image of a woman with a certain look, a soft quality or expression that drew me to her […]

Last weekend, The Outsiders in London hosted the opening for Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) latest solo show. Entitled A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win, the new body of work featured mostly a series of studies that the UK-based painter labels his “morning glories” and which he uses to prepare for his large scale paintings (like the ones he did for a showing in 2012). Included in the mix were several larger pieces and as a whole, this exhibition showed off Harrington’s deft balance between the abstract and realism […]

Art Focus: Fabien Mérelle

Last month at Art Stage Singapore (covered), our attention was drawn to photos of this exquisite sculpture from French artist Fabien Mérelle shown at the Edouard Malingue Gallery booth). The piece entitled Pentateuque features a man bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders (in the form of an elephant),  a translation of a drawing by the same artist into a three-dimensional form. The sculpt was created wit resin, paint, hair and fabric, and stands only 30 x 27 x 12 inches. For those who liked this work, […]

Kai & Sunny for Southbank Centre

London’s art lovers will be getting a healthy dose of Kai & Sunny soon as the Southbank Centre has commissioned the two to design imagery for their their membership pack, posters, press and all other media (set to run two years). The artistic complex consists of three main buildings (the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Hayward Gallery), and is Europe’s largest center for the arts so it will certainly be a high profile showcase for the duo’s abstracted birds (which will also be seen on an outdoor billboard). Via […]
