Openings: David Choe x George Thompson – New Works @ Known Gallery

Opening along with George Thompson’s Revisionist History at Known Gallery was a exhibition of new works by David Choe (featured) [edit: according to David Choe’s blog, these are collaborative pieces with George Thompson].  The artist took a break from his figurative images of city dwelling ladies and angry red colors to explore a different painterly direction (although if you look hard enough, you might be able to make out some tits, cocks, and assholes in some of the works).  Consisting of large works in black […]

Openings: Marcel Dzama – “Behind Every Curtain” @ David Zwirner

We recently attended the absolutely packed opening of Marcel Dzama’s latest solo show at David Zwirner, entitled Behind Every Curtain. As promised, the exhibition featured Dzama’s signature watercolor works on paper and dioramas, but also included some amazing life-sized figurative sculptures, as well as sketches and renderings for his movie A Game of Chess. One of  the most captivating pieces of the show was the rotating carousel of metal robot characters, which really captured the whimsy and imagination that make Dzama such a favorite. See […]

Openings: Black Swan @ Regen Projects

Oscar Weekend, AM attended the Black Swan inspired group show at Regen Projects, which featured an A-list lineup with names like Matthew Barney, Richard Prince, Dan Graham, Glenn Ligon, and Anish Kapoor. The exhibion explores the illusion of dualities described in Darren Aronofsky’s chilling psycho-drama: black vs. white, purity vs. sexuality, and apparition vs. reality. The works strive to examine the tension between these spaces, deconstructing their presumed boundaries. The pieces quite literally reflect this sentiment, with black and white monochrome images paired with reflective […]

Videos / Openings: Ed Ruscha – “Psycho Spaghetti Westerns” @ Gagosian (Beverly Hills)

Last week, the Gagosian in Beverly Hills hosted Psycho Spaghetti Westerns, Ed Ruscha’s first painting exhibition in LA in twelve years. The legendary artist brought ten large pieces for his Los Angeles fans, each an extension of the ideas he played with in his Course of Empire series, with which Ruscha represented the U.S. at the 2005 Venice Biennale. For those interested, you can take a look at the video footage above of the opening from hyde or die and also check out some photos […]

Preview: INLE @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Next Thursday, March 11th, the highly anticipated INLE group show will open at Gallery 1988’s Melrose location. Curated by Greg Simkins, the exhibition has been a long time coming for the LA-based artist as much of his work references his childhood favorite, Watership Down, a book that has had a profound impact on him as an artist. Featuring one of the best lineup of artists we have seen in a long time, this is definitely one show you don’t want to miss. Take some time […]

Recap: Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” @ Academy Awards

Don’t tell us that we’re the only people disappointed that Banksy didn’t win the Academy Award’s Best Documentary category. AM has been in full Oscar-watch mode since the movie’s nomination to the shortlist. After the Academy denied Banksy’s request to appear in disguise, producer Jaimie D’Cruz was appointed to attend the Oscar week festivities on behalf of the film and would have walked up to accept if the documentary won. Even in the face of stiff competition, we got our hopes up that Exit Through The […]

Outdoors: POW WOW ’11 – Walls & Luau

The POW WOW wasn’t only an indoor affair. Being in Hawaii, the gang took full advantage of all that the beautiful tropical atmosphere had to offer. An entire side of the building (across from Fresh Cafe) was secured for the artists who quickly put their street game facse on. Prime, Wu Yue, 123Klan, Will Barras, Meggs, and Ekundayo grabbed their spray cans to work under the Honolulu sky. The end product was dynamic murals created so that the local art fans could enjoy for years to come. […]

Openings: Clare Rojas – “Inside Bleak” @ PRISM Gallery

Last night, AM attended the jam-packed opening of Clare Rojas’ solo exhibition at the PRISM gallery with what appeared to be the rest of young Hollywood. The San Francisco-based painter and musician impressed with her folk-inspired murals, paintings, wall panels, and the sheer breadth of her work. Filling the expansive architectural space is no small feat, but Rojas did it by further exploring the abstraction she recently started as well as increasing the detail in her figurative work. More opening pics after the jump…

Jason Jaworski’s DIE JUNGE DIE YOUNG

Jason Jaworski is opening his latest performance/film piece this weekend at San Francisco’s annual Noise Pop festival. Aptly titled DIE JUNGE DIE YOUNG, the film serves as a summation of Jaworski’s year in travels and an expression of his pain at the recent loss of some friends and family. The last time we saw Jaworski perform, he was on stage with David Choe’s (featured), both in their underwear, serving as backup dancers to Die Antwo0rd. Needless to say, with an accompanying installation by Monica Canilao, […]
