We recently attended the absolutely packed opening of Marcel Dzama’s latest solo show at David Zwirner, entitled Behind Every Curtain. As promised, the exhibition featured Dzama’s signature watercolor works on paper and dioramas, but also included some amazing life-sized figurative sculptures, as well as sketches and renderings for his movie A Game of Chess. Oscar Weekend, AM attended the Black Swan inspired group show at Regen Projects, which featured an A-list lineup with names like Matthew Barney, Richard Prince, Dan Graham, Glenn Ligon, and Anish Kapoor. The exhibion explores the illusion of dualities described in Darren Aronofsky’s chilling psycho-drama: black vs. white, purity vs. sexuality, and apparition vs. reality. The works strive to examine the tension between these spaces, deconstructing their presumed boundaries. Last week, the Gagosian in Beverly Hills hosted Psycho Spaghetti Westerns, Ed Ruscha’s first painting exhibition in LA in twelve years. The legendary artist brought ten large pieces for his Los Angeles fans, each an extension of the ideas he played with in his Course of Empire series, with which Ruscha represented the U.S. at the 2005 Venice Biennale. Outdoors: POW WOW ’11 – Walls & Luau

The POW WOW wasn’t only an indoor affair. Being in Hawaii, the gang took full advantage of all that the beautiful tropical atmosphere had to offer. An entire side of the building (across from Fresh Cafe) was secured for the artists who quickly put their street game facse on. Prime, Wu Yue, 123Klan, Will Barras, Meggs, and Ekundayo grabbed their spray cans to work under the Honolulu sky. The end product was dynamic murals created so that the local art fans could enjoy for years to come. […]

Last night, AM attended the jam-packed opening of Clare Rojas’ solo exhibition at the PRISM gallery with what appeared to be the rest of young Hollywood. The San Francisco-based painter and musician impressed with her folk-inspired murals, paintings, wall panels, and the sheer breadth of her work. Filling the expansive architectural space is no small feat, but Rojas did it by further exploring the abstraction she recently started as well as increasing the detail in her figurative work. Jason Jaworski is opening his latest performance/film piece this weekend at San Francisco’s annual Noise Pop festival. Aptly titled DIE JUNGE DIE YOUNG, the film serves as a summation of Jaworski’s year in travels and an expression of his pain at the recent loss of some friends and family.
