Preview: “Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time” @ Whitney Museum

The Whitney Museum will be holding an exhibition to feature Edward Hopper and many of his contemporary peers from 1900-1940. Focusing on this period of time when massive changes were occurring in America, artists such as Ed captured the sweeping transformation across the nation in both rural and urban areas. In case you’re wondering who else is a fan, maybe you’ll remember Banksy taking a page out of Hopper’s famous “Night Hawks” (here). This show opens October 28th. Check out a preview after the jump.

Opening next month, “Myth of the American Motorcycle” at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (previously the site of the Shepard Fairey retrospective) will feature the vibrant paintings of Rosson Crow (featured). The exhibition, fueled by Rosson’s love for motorcycle lore, combines her expansive-retro style with the thematic choice of an American icon – a perfect match. To continue our focus on some of the most enjoyable elements of the Frieze Art Fair, we were drawn in to a room within David Zwirner’s booth dedicated to an installation of works by Marcel Dzama. A full sized hooded mannequin, complete with rifle, pirouetted in the centre of the room and drew voyeurs into a world of wonder from Dzama. Last Saturday night, Chloe Early (interviewed) and Amy Sol (interviewed) opened their shows at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. Chloe impressed with some of her largest paintings to date filled with here special mix of abstraction and realism entitled “Birdsongs & Machine Sounds”. Amy brought with her a smaller body of work, “Dear Milky Way”, that included both delicate paintings and drawings featuring her sweet characters and their harmonious relationship with nature. Last night, AM attended the opening celebration of the Youtube Play: a Biennial of Creative Video at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. As previewed, the 23,000 videos were filtered down to “the Shortlist“ of 125 that were then whittled down to the final 25 winners. The museum was packed with patrons and art fans attending the inaugural ceremonies.
