Banksy Included in 2010 TIME 100

Two names familiar to AM readers, and no doubt to mainstream popular culture aficionados today, is Shepard Fairey and Banksy. Today, we learned that Banksy was included in TIME Magazine’s TIME100 list, featuring 100 of the most influential people “who most affect our world”. Openings: Rooms @ Scion Space

On Saturday night, AM attended the opening of “Rooms” at Scion Space (previewed). The show, curated by Roger Gastman, certainly brought us back to the old school days of youth. A wide array of nostalgic goodness such as Laser Tag, VHS lined living rooms, Michael Jordan & Dream Team posters, elementary school desks, bus stops, gothic throwbacks and even an outdoor street/play area were included. NYC is the place to be this weekend – Ryden, Julie Heffernan, Faile/Bast, and Shepard Fairey – just a stunning lineup of shows offering something for every taste. It looks like Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) has just released a new print with Modern Multiples (who we visited last November) in an edition of 36. Entitled “As Cold As They Come”, our readers may remember the image from Mark’s show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (covered) last September. In what sounds like an eternity in the fast-moving and evolving world of contemporary art, Blaine Fontana has just opened his first gallery exhibition in 3 years. He returns with a tightly constructed, cohesive body of work with a unified theme. The solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects in Culver City features 13 paintings, using acrylic and almost entirely on board, all intricately and exquisitely rendered by the Otis graduate. Sometimes, we get spoiled at AM with behind the scenes studio visits where we see much of the art work before show openings, but in this case, our visit to David Choe’s (featured) studio definitely did not spoil our appetite for his latest series of works which were revealed at a private opening last night.
