Openings: Ian Francis – “Exodus” @ Lazarides

Our most anticipated show of the year thus far opened in London this week at Lazarides and we had to make the trip down to see Ian Francis’ (featured) “Exodus”. We teased you a few images last week, but now we can bring you some shots from the opening of the paintings and charcoal pieces the show comprised of. The show is surprisingly Ian’s first London solo show, and it signals his departure from the UK to pastures new in the United States – hence […]

Video: Mark Warren Jacques – “Mind Visit”

Portland artist Mark Warren Jacques (interviewed) will be returning to San Francisco soon and has released a video in conjunction with his visit. Entitled “Mind Visit”, the short film is an exploratory journey into both the mind and studio of the young artist as he diligently prepares for his part in the upcoming group show “New Territory” debuting next weekend at White Walls. Equally haunting and enlightening, “Mind Visit” is less of a welcoming insight than it is a seemingly drug induced and slightly voyeuristic […]

Cy Twombly Paints for the Ceiling of the Louvre

Contemporary artist and legend Cy Twombly was recently commissioned by the Louvre to create a mural to for the ceiling of one of its oldest wings. This is an honor bestowed to only two other artists before Twombly and the first for an American artist. For one of world’s most prestigious museums, Twombly chose to contrast it’s rich history of complex classical art with an abstract contemporary flare by utilizing a canvas with a blue hue with floating geometric discs emblazoned with the names of […]

Releases: Ryan McGinley – “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” Limited Edition Book

To accompany Ryan McGinley’s insanely popular exhibition (the opening had to be shut down by the fire marshal due to the volume of the crowd) Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Dashwood Books has released a limited edition, hardcover book featuring images from the acclaimed photographer’s current show at Team Gallery. The $95 book, an edition of 2,000, is the artist’s “most ambitious book to date, a beautifully produced volume, luxuriously printed in tritone with a folded poster wrap.” It looks as though all 100 images […]

Openings: Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The beautiful weather and the promise of great art seemingly brought out all the five boroughs Thursday night for the opening of the Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition – which was so large that it overflowed Liner’s third floor space into an entire other gallery on the floor below – leaned toward presenting individual works from the diverse group of artists, instead of toward collaborative installations as expected. Of course, pieces by stars of the original scene such as David Ellis, Swoon, […]
