Update: Stella Im Hultberg

Looks like Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) has been working through some ideas recently for her upcoming show “Penumbra” alongside Amy Sol (teased) in November at Copro Gallery. Stella’s versatile showing at Thinkspace Gallery in July left her many options to pursue, but this new show, tentatively speaking, will probably focus on works on paper and perhaps wood. Also, as if Stella and Amy weren’t enough, Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) will be showing concurrently with them. More images from Stella and showcard after the jump…

Preview: Masakatsu Sashie – “Twentieth Century Boy”

Opening tomorrow night in Hollywood (as we told a couple weeks ago) is Japanese phenom Masakatsu Sashie’s tribute to the British glam rock band T-Rex. Riffing on his trademark floating orbs, typically composed of reclaimed vending machines, electronics and cultural scraps, Sashie has meticulously hidden references of one of his favorite bands within this batch of paintings. Thanks to curatorial work of Darren Romanelli (designer of Dr. Romanelli clothing) and Eric Nakamura (owner of Giant Robot), collectors in Southern California will have an opportunity to […]

Streets/Sky: Ron English – “Clouds”

With a 35 year career of billboard hijacks already under his belt and a recent showing at the prestigious Elms Lesters Painting Rooms (studio visit and opening),  Ron English’s career is going in only one direction: up.  And in this case, quite literally, Ron has taken his art to a whole new level by spelling out the word “cloud”, in clouds, five times over the NYC skyline.  Video after the jump.

Teaser: Pop Life @ Tate Modern

A pretty major exhibition, “Pop Life,” is opening this week (October 1st) at the Tate Modern. The exhibition will take Andy Warhol’s famous quote “good business is the best art” as its slogan and re-examine how Warhol and legacy of “Pop Art” has influenced artists in the ways they harnass mass media to promote and create an image for themselves. Among the artists represented will be Tracey Emin, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst (video of his search for identical twins for this exhibition after the jump), […]

Openings: Antony Micallef – “Becoming Animal” @ Lazarides

It’s not that often that you feel completely blown away when you walk into a gallery, but that was the feeling AM experienced when we first walked into Lazarides (Rathbone Place) at the opening of Antony Micallef’s epic solo show, “Becoming Animal.” We’d been anticipating this show since well before we interviewed Antony (read that here) a couple of weeks back, and hearing him talk about his motivations behind the show only whet our appetite even more. He told us that this show was all about him […]

Preview: Melissa Forman – “Garden of Shadows” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Next weekend, Melissa Forman will be bringing her evocative portraiture to Corey Helford Gallery with her new body of work “Garden of Shadows.” Some of her paintings seem to be of the modern women yet give off a classical feeling – perhaps because of the poses and the clothing of the long ago Victorian era.  The centerpiece of the exhibition will be four “personified portraits of medieval medicine’s bodily humours (Purity, Vexation, Reluctance and Melancholia).”  The show opens on  October 3rd so be sure to […]

Decoding Jackson Pollock

Could Jackson Pollock’s famous painting “Mural” (commissioned by the collector Peggy Guggenheim for her New York City apartment) actually contain the letters of his name? According to art historian, Henry Adams, that’s exactly what he sees hidden among the one of the 20th century’s most important artworks.  At first we were skeptical as most Pollock “experts” were, but check out this little roll-over interactive feature and you may be convinced as well.

Viewpoints: Traditional Museums Set Record Attendence Non-Traditionally

The recession has been hitting everyone hard, even the museums are being hit in their wallets. From the MOCA needing a bail out to the Rose Art Museum selling off their collection, museums seem to be dealing with declining attendance and many have been forced to reduce payroll or take mandatory staff furloughs to make ends meet. Yet there’s a silver lining to every situation. Some museums have found ways to boost attendance by tapping into alternative “non-traditional” art forms. Museum mainstays such as Rembrandt, […]

Preview: “Three Apples” Hello Kitty Show @ Royal T

We have tried to avoid posting about this show for a while now, but glimpses of new work pouring into the AM office forced our hand. Yes, Hello Kitty’s 35th Anniversary is upon us (what, you didn’t know?) and SANRIO has enlisted a pretty nice list of artists to help them celebrate including Gary Baseman (featured), Ron English (featured), Buff Monster (featured), Camilla d’Errico, Luke Chueh (interviewed), Deph, Yosuke Ueno, Colin Christian, Amanda Visell, Jeremyville, Melissa Haslam (interviewed), Hush (interviewed) just to name a few.
