Openings: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “The Pearl Thief” @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

Last night, Greg Simkins aka Craola (interviewed) opened his show “The Pearl Thief” at the LA location of Gallery 1988.  Featuring his largest painting to date (glimpses of which you saw in our studio visit) and a riddle/puzzle that lead to a prize of an original painting from Greg, show-goers left with plenty to talk about. “The Pearl Thief” painting (seen above), was pretty amazing. One of the most detailed paintings we have ever seen; it was like ten paintings in one with many of [...]

Openings: Craola & Anthony Lister @ Fifty24SF

Greg “Craola” Simkins’ (interviewed) and Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) shows opened last night at Fifty24SF with both artists in attendance to greet adoring fans.  Simkins expanded on “still life” themes from his last two shows while Lister focused on different versions of a familiar image as well as painting photos of his friends. See all the opening pics after the jump.

Preview/Interviews: Craola @ Fifty24SF

Greg Simkins, or as he is popularly known, Craola (something he kept from his graffiti days) is opening his first show of 2009 at Fifty24SF on February 5th. His show “Seeing Things” (teased) expands on the pseudo still life format he has been working on, and the fact there is something alive in the arrangement that makes you take a second look. He talks about this as well as some other things an interview with us after the jump.

Teaser: Craola @ Fifty24SF

As previously mentioned in passing, Greg “Craola” Simkins is opening his show “Seeing Things” on February 5th at Fifty24SF concurrently with Anthony Lister. Judging from the imagery from this showcard (clouds of goo, pedestals, stark black backgrounds, etc.), he is continuing and expanding on the themes of his two successful sold out shows last year “It Wanders East” and “It Wanders West.” Look for more details here as the show draws nearer. Discuss this show here. Discuss Craola here.

Update: Anthony Lister

We recently came across this picture of Anthony Lister working on an etching for an upcoming release from Paper Monster scheduled for this month.  No details yet as to the edition size, price, or even the image, but from the looks of it, the print will most likely be of the painting seen below that was shown by New Image Art at Art Basel week. We are also looking forward to his two-person show with Craola coming up next month at Fifty24SF, but more on [...]
