Preview: Damien Hirst – “The Souls” @ Paul Stolper Gallery

It’s become more than apparent now that Damien Hirst has  a thing for the fragile beauty of butterflies.  They will completely take over his next show “The Souls”, which will feature 120 vibrant foilblock butterfly prints.  The exhibition in total is made up of 4 butterflies, in 80 different colourways, each one in an edition of 15 and rumored to cost £3,000 each.  Flutter over to Paul Stolper Gallery starting Oct 7 to check them out. More after the jump…

Art Basel Switzerland 2010 – Part 2

As promised, we continue our coverage of Art Basel Switzerland 2010 by bringing you images of the contemporary works in the fair. Of course, almost all of today’s leading artists were represented at the show, making it literally a who’s who of the contemporary art scene. As with fairs in the recent past, Ed Ruscha seemed to be very hot, with his significant pop-text pieces popping up at several booths. Another artist that was perhaps even more highly visible at the show was American painter […]

Showing: Damien Hirst and Michael Joo – “Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun?” @ Haunch of Venison Gallery

Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun is a two-man exhibition featuring two artists who have known each other since 1991 when they met in Cologne — Damien Hirst and Michael Joo.  Although this is the first time the duo have worked with each other, they have been in correspondence and discourse regarding their respective artistic practices since they’ve met.  Joo’s work in the show explores ideas about identity, nature, and the body.  Hirst, as you might expect, focuses on mortality, life, and death.  […]

Showing: Damien Hirst – “Cornucopia @ Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

Is it just us or is it a little ironic that Damien Hirst is showing at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, especially since included is one of his famous formaldehyde shark tanks (although this current specimen, a great white was apparently already dead, unlike the tiger shark that rocketed him to fame in 1992)? As we first told you about here, Hirst’s show, which will run through September, is a retrospective of his most famous pieces including spin paintings, skulls, and formaldehyde pieces, but none […]

Teaser: Damien Hirst – “Cornucopia” @ Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

Damien Hirst is heading up the centenary celebration for the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco with his latest “Cornucopia” exhibition. Much like his recent Gagosian Gallery show in NYC (covered), this installment will feature 60 works that span the major points of his illustrious career. From butterflies, medicinal cabinets, spot & spin paintings, and formaldehyde glass tanks, museum goers in the exclusive city of Monaco will be able to experience the brand of art only the YBA artist can produce. The show opens up April 2nd. Image […]

Openings: Damien Hirst – “End of an Era” @ Gagosian Gallery (Madison Avenue)

This past Saturday night, AM had the chance to tag along with British contemporary icon Damien Hirst at his opening at the Gagosian Gallery (Madison Ave). As stated in our preview, the show titled “End of an Era” was exactly that – an end to a highly notable period of Damien’s infamously publicized career where he made headlines with awe-inspiring and highly controversial achievements in the art world. This show contained the last of many prime examples of the British Bad Boy’s most renowned and infamous works – important iconic achievements […]

Preview: Damien Hirst – “End of an Era” @ Gagosian Gallery (Madison Avenue)

On Jan. 30, Gagosian Gallery on Madison Avenue opens an exhibition containing works by the most famous and controversial contemporary art superstar of his generation. Attracting loud attention with everything he does, YBA leader Damien Hirst will bring over to the US’s shores new paintings and sculpture with the centerpiece being “End of an Era”, a severed bull’s head with golden horns and crowned with a solid gold disc. It is a classic Hirst formaldehyde sculpture that acts as a coda to his piece “The […]

Jeff Koons & Damien Hirst Prices Drop 50%

Two of the biggest stars of the art boom in the latter part of the last decade, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, were bound to feel the effects of the down economy. It’s taken some time to compile the data of all the fallout but it looks like their works have taken about a 50% hit in value since those happier times. On the brighter side, sounds as though the fairly or unfairly portrayed scapegoats of the art world’s extravagance should make a recovery eventually, […]

Hirst x Louis Vuitton

After some angst about getting recognition for his hand-painted art (here & here) as opposed to his “factory” produced pieces, Damien Hirst returns briefly to more commercial endeavors. No stranger to artist collaborations, Louis Vuitton joined up with Hirst to produce what looks to be a new line of luggage with his signature butterflies and effects. Judging from all the compartments, the piece pictured might not be useful for the casual traveller as Hirst’s inspiration was storage for surgical instruments. Take a closer look at […]
