A couple Saturdays ago, the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction opened at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. As we previewed a couple weeks back, curators, The Future Tense, brought together an impressive roster of 30 emerging and established artists in the contemporary and urban/street art genres – including such big names as Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Harland Miller, Faile, Russell Young and Tracey Emin – to commemorate 30 years of AIDS research. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be holding a benefit art auction and exhibition entitled RE:DEFINE to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus. Last Friday, the C.A.V.E. Gallery and Brooklyn Street Art in collaboration with Thinkspace presented an exhibit titled 39 Stories: Street Art Saved My Life. The exhibit featured 39 different artists including the likes of Anthony Lister, Futura, Judith Supine, Know Hope, Faile, and Swoon to many other names familiar to AM readers. Openings: Dan Witz – “Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Brett Amory’s solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was also Dan Witz’s Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise. This show featured the Brooklyn-based artist and his hyper-realistic painting style where he applies old master techniques to create incredibly vibrant and detailed works. We saw his signature large-scale oil paintings which feature Witz’s crazy and energy packed mosh pits as well as some works from his illuminated series. A show that closed recently in San Francisco at White Walls, What the %$#@? (WTF) featured the acronym inspiring work of Dan Witz. The ongoing series of works consisted of his photorealistic renderings of people trapped behind grills, bars, and windows.
