Benefits: Brooklyn Museum’s Gala – “The Brooklyn Artist’s Ball”

The Brooklyn Museum recently held its annual benefit gala to raise funds for the institution’s programming. This year, the theme was The Brooklyn Artist’s Ball and 18 Brooklyn-based artists were invited to install their vision and transform a 40-foot-long table into a specially created work of art that will be on view for one night only at the exclusive dinner and after party. Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. Daniel Arsham’s exhibition, Reach Ruin, recently opened at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia where he was the artist-in-residence. Arsham, who is also one-half of design studio Snarkitecture (a partnership with Alex Mustonen) was inspired by his experiences with Hurricane Andrew as a youngster (the show’s title is an anagram for the word hurricane) to create a series of works that speak to the fragility of architecture in the face of the destructive power of nature.
