Studio Visits: Regan Rosburg

AM recently got the chance to visit Regan Rosburg in her Denver studio, complete with animal skeletons, insect carcasses and all the flora and fauna she uses to make her envirocentric creations. Her work is equal parts visual art to be enjoyed by the viewer and a call to action to conserve nature. She is best known for her ability to use resin to create depth and an uncanny feeling of life in suspension, giving her work an unusual mix of natural beauty and an ever present uneasiness that the […]

Continuing to work on her watercolor amalgamations of creatures upon creatures forming more creatures, the San Diego-based painter will be introducing some of her new creations soon as you can see… Discuss Laura Ball here.

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Anger Management” @ Black Book Gallery

A large group of enthusiastic fans were on hand to greet Jeremy Fish (featured) during his July 3rd opening at Denver’s Black Book Gallery. The show is titled Anger Management and features 18 new pieces of work, largely inspired by his recent aneurysm and resulting need to find a way to mellow out. The show will be on display until July 25th, so stop by if you are in the area. Discuss Jeremy Fish here.

Showing: John Knuth – “Nothing Without Providence” @ David B. Smith Gallery

You may remember awhile back, we shared a video from artist John Knuth and his unique form of markmaking. By feeding houseflies pigments and then allowing them to run through part of their life cycles on canvas on site at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, the Los Angeles-based artist was able to create some abstract paintings through his little assistants’ labor. Nothing Without Providence, a reference to the Colorado state motto, runs through July 10th.

Previews: Paul Jacobsen – “Outpost” @ David B. Smith Gallery

On May 1st, the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver will be hosting a new body or work from Paul Jacobsen entitled Outpost. For his second show with the gallery, the locally-based artist will put forth a new series of still life paintings produced with classical techniques but with a non-typical subject matter. After purchasing a miner’s cabin in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado just prior to the legalization of marijuana, Jacobsen was inspired to create oil on linen works featuring the “sacred herb” along […]

Openings: Shawn Huckins – “The American _ _ tier” @ Goodwin Fine Art

AM was on hand for the April 17th opening reception of The American _ _ tier solo show from Shawn Huckins (see the recent studio visit here) at Goodwin Fine Art in Denver. There is an almost universal appeal to period specific portraits, as is evident in their prominence in museums and noteworthy collections. The real brilliance of Mr. Huckins’ work is adding a lighthearted element to this gorgeous portraiture, giving the viewer permission to enjoy a piece of work that without the addition of text could seem stuffy or overly serious, […]

Studio Visits: Shawn Huckins

Huckins is best known for his ability to engage viewers using classic style paintings of historical figures with overlaid text, the final piece being equal parts gorgeous portraiture and lighthearted humor. For each series, he has concentrated on a different period of […]

AM recently joined the masses at Robischon Gallery for the January 15th opening of Christian Rex van Minnen’s Golden Memes. The show is a homecoming for the New York-based artist, who brought his grotesque re-imagining of the Dutch Golden Age to Denver. The exhibition includes ten pieces of new work, most large in scale, making the bizarre imagery even more powerful. The show will be on display until March 7th, so stop by for a look yourself if you are in the area. Discuss Christian Rex van Minnen here.

Openings: Mars-1, Oliver Vernon, Damon Soule – “Momentum” @ Space Gallery

Arrested Motion was on hand for the Saturday, November 8th opening of “Momentum”, the three person show featuring Mars-1, Oliver Vernon and Damon Soule  at Space Gallery in Denver, Colorado.  The highlight of the exhibition was a 10′ by 23′ piece that was a collaboration of all three artists (called The Furtherrr Collective when assembled), a piece so large and powerful in texture, color, and size that it feels as if a riff has opened up and the wall has become a worm hole into […]
