Upcoming: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

Starting on September 24th, the Detroit Institute of Arts will unveil an installation from Swoon (interviewed) entitled Thalassa. The 20-foot tall, 400-pound sculptural piece named after the Greek goddess of the sea – originally displayed in New Orleans (covered) – will be adapted for DIA’s Great Hall. The massive work from the American artist will be suspended from the ceiling and will coincide with a mural project in Detroit’s Jefferson-Chalmers district. Openings: Futura – “NEW HORIZONS” @ Library Street Collective

Last weekend, Library Street Collective in Detroit hosting the opening for Futura latest solo show entitled NEW HORIZONS. Along with all new paintings that features some of the graffiti legend’s signature abstract color studies with gyroscopic structures as well as his old school pointman characters, new large-scale pieces were prepared for the outdoor space in BELT Alley for the PUBLIC MATTER series of works. From April 23rd until June 12th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be showing In Between, a solo exhibition by How & Nosm. The show includes 12 new large paintings on canvas, and for the first time, more than 30 process pencil drawings, as well as new mural that’s being painted right now in central Detroit. Last month, as part of the Murals In the Market festival, Luke Chueh (interviewed) painted a rare public arts mural in Detroit’s Eastern Market. The Los Angeles-based painter decided to go with an image inspired by his thoughts of the Motor City as being the home of house music and DJ culture as we know it. Jeff Soto (interviewed) has just teamed up with 1xRUN for a print release entitled Owl Of Infinite Knowledge. This newest offering from the Riverside-based artist featuring the nocturnal bird of prey is part of the Murals In The Market Featured Artist Print Series, corresponding with the Murals In the Market festival opening later this week.
