Streets: El Mac – “Desert Rose” @ Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum

The Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona recently commissioned gifted muralist El Mac to create a piece on one of their concrete exterior walls. Painted in the Los Angeles-based artist’s unique rippled style of applying spray paint, Desert Rose depicts one of his good friends and features some background designs at the top by a local Mesa resident and graffiti artist from the early 90’s – Mando Rascón. He further elaborates – “The image is based on my photos of Karen Bracamonte, an immigrant from Guatemala who is […]

Streets: El Mac x David Choe (Phoenix)

After collaborated on a series of works in Cambodia last month, El Mac and David Choe met up again in Phoenix recently to work on a new project. The mural at Cobra Arcade Bar featured Miles’ signature ripple-line portraits (this time of his friend Darlene) along with Choe’s loose embellishments surrounding the image. Take a look at more photos below… Top image by @ektorlouise. Discuss El Mac here. Discuss David Choe here.

Streets: El Mac (San Diego)

After returning from a trip to Cambodia where he painted a few murals (covered) along with his Igloo Hong brothers, El Mac decided to work on a project a little closer to home. His latest public arts contribution was created over the holidays at UC San Diego, another portrait piece featuring his distinctive ripple effect. You can watch a couple short videos here and here to get a glimpse at his technique. Photo credit: Eric Heights. Discuss El Mac here.

After a closer look at a mural El Mac recently painted in Phnom Penh, here are now some photos and video of the Igloo Hong Project where other artists including Aryz, Esao Andrews, James Jean joined David Choe as they spread their artistic talents in Cambodia. For more info, you can read more about their trip on Choe’s website as well as his Instagram.

Streets: El Mac (Cambodia)

Those who have been following David Choe’s Instagram no doubt already know about his Igloo Hong Project where artists Aryz, Esao Andrews, James Jean, and El Mac along with Choe spent some time in Cambodia creating public art. The piece seen here entitled Thread of Life was painted by Mac in Phnom Penh of a local Khmer artisan named Moeun Thary, who hand-embroiders traditional Khmer ceremonial garments. He explains that the “mural honors Cambodia’s artists, both contemporary and those lost during the Cambodian genocide of the […]

Two years after his last solo show with Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark (covered), El Mac is back with his newest solo show Objects At Rest, opening in Aalborg on the 12th of September. Today between 10 – 11 am PDT, El Mac will be releasing a new print through The Desert Soul. The two variants seen above – black edition of 47 (left) & dark brown edition of 21 (right) measure 28 x 36.5″ paper size, (24 x 32″ printed area) and will come signed, […]

Streets: El Mac x Kofie (LA)

El Mac recently teamed up with his friend Augustine Kofie (featured) once again and to paint a new piece entitled Icarian Flight somewhere on the streets of LA. This is not the first time the two locally-based artists have collaborated, and with a good reason we must add after seeing this mural. The juxtaposition of El Mac’s distinctive soft portraiture against sharp and geo-based abstraction of Kofie creates a powerful mixture that brings out the best of both styles. On top of being different imagery wise, the transparent, aerosol-based […]
