Openings: “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA (First Look)

This morning, the Los Angeles MOCA lifted the veil of secrecy on its highly anticipated “Art in the Streets” exhibition.  This first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art is the brainchild of Jeffrey Deitch (along with associate co-curators Roger Gastman & Aaron Rose) and was certainly one of the first enticing possibilities that came to AM’s mind when we first heard of his unconventional hiring as MOCA’s director early last year. Despite the inevitable quibbling about who was and who wasn’t included […]

Films: Steve “ESPO” Powers – “A Love Letter for You”

Happy Valentine’s Day art lovers. Here’s a post perfect for today. Last week, we were lucky enough to attend a rare screening of Steve Powers movie entitled A Love Letter for You, which is about the amazing mural project of the same name that Powers completed last year along the elevated train line in West Philadelphia (c0vered). Going in, we had expected the film—directed by Joey Garfield—to be a straight documentary about how the large-scale public art project consisting of over 50 buildings was conceived […]

They come from an edition of 300, but we assumed they were long sold out. Grab one now, as it looks as ESPO is signing each one with a punchline to the storyboard and a hand drawn image of everyone’s favorite weakest super-hero. The wonderful ‘Handy Signs’ print is […]

Video: Steve “ESPO” Powers – Love Letter to Syracuse

Building on the amazing success of his Love Letter project in Philadelphia (covered), Steve “ESPO” Powers and his sign-painting crew recently went upstate to the “Rust-Belt” city of Syracuse, New York, to transform the train bridges that divide the town’s poor Near West Side from the rest of downtown to display beautiful and inspirational messages of love from Syracuse to Syracuse. Powers, as seen in the above video, worked with local art groups and talked to people in the community to develop the words used […]
