Showing: Clayton Brothers – “Open to the Public” @ Mark Moore Gallery

The last time we saw a solo show from the Clayton Brothers in Los Angeles (covered), it was 2011. Showing through this weekend, the exhibition at the Mark Moore Gallery gives Angelino fans of the talented and respected artists another chance to check out the new body of work featuring mixed-media drawings, assemblage, photography, video, and installations. Open to the Public draws its inspiration and eclectic setup from the Sun Thrift Store in Sunland, a famous local “thrifting mecca” and includes not just the brothers’ paintings but […]

Previews: Ai Weiwei – “@Large” on Alcatraz

Starting September 27th thru April of next year, a major exhibition from Ai Weiwei will be on view at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The legendary prison and tourist hotspot is an intriguing location for the Chinese aritst’s creative endeavor as well as his message about human rights and freedom of expression, bringing his work in tension with ideas of confinement and restriction intrinsic to the locale. Seven site specific installations – With Wind (seen above), Trace, Refraction, Stay Tuned, Illumination, Blossom, Yours Truly will be […]

Streets: Dalek x Instagram (New York)

The geometrically inclined James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed) recently travelled from his home in North Carolina to paint Instagram’s first ever sponsored public art at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “Pumpkins” @ Victoria Miro

Currently showing in London at Victorio Miro, Pumpkins from Yayoi Kusuma is an exhibition that features one of her most famous motifs. The celebration of the fruit in question was approached from different angles by Kusama, utilizing her various skill sets – paintings, large mosaic sculptures inside the gallery, and bronzes in the water garden. Despite the familiarity of the iconic subject matter for the Japanese artist, the bronzes do represent the first time she has worked in that medium on such a large scale and they alone are […]

Openings: KAWS – “Clean Slate” @ Harbour City (Hong Kong)

Right on the heals of a successful opening of his solo in Los Angeles (covered), KAWS has returned for a second engagement at Harbour City in Hong Kong. The star of the event was a new sculptural installation featuring a cluster of his signature companion figures entitled Clean Slate, situated in the Ocean Terminal forecourt where his previous massive Passing Through companion could be seen back in 2010 (covered). Complementing this was the New York-based artist’s imagery all along the corridor leading into the shopping complex […]

Streets: DALeast (Portland)

After recently sharing murals from the Forest For The Trees event with you (here & here), we now bring you one of the final walls being painted this year for the nonprofit public art project. The stunning new piece rendered in the South Africa-based artist’s signature aesthetic is entitled Persistent Parabola and features a wave playing with a cargo ship and falling crates. Dal states his primary influence for this wall as an old Chinese proverb – “water can carry a boat, it can also turn […]

Openings: KAWS – “Man’s Best Friend” @ Honor Fraser Gallery

Last night, the Honor Fraser Gallery hosted the highly anticipated return (covered) of Brian Donnelly (aka KAWS) to Los Angeles with a show entitled Man’s Best Friend. As implied by the title, Snoopy, along with a cast of familiar characters from Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts series were the focus of the Brooklyn-based artist’s imagery. The black and white utilized for a good portion of the work featuring the comic strip provided a stark contrast to the vivid colors seen in KAWS’ previous acrylic paintings, but it […]
