Openings: Gary Baseman – “Mythical Homeland” @ Shulamit Gallery

Over the weekend, the Shulamit Gallery in Venice, California opened their doors to Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) Mythical Homeland. Dominating the showspace was a birch forest installation that had photographs, drawings, and paintings hung throughout which references the experiences the LA-based artist’s father went through as a freedom fighter hiding from the Nazis (also illustrated in a recent music video with Die Antwoord). Openings: Ian Davenport – “Colorfall” @ Paul Kasmin

Now through October 26th at Paul Kasmin Gallery, British artist and YBA alumnus Ian Davenport has an exhibition of new paintings titled Colorfall. Known for his colorful “puddle” abstract paintings, Davenport brings brilliantly chromatic canvases, a spectrum of more or less evenly painted stripes cascading down before some unseen current disrupts their flow, transforming them into swirling eddies of colors mixing together. Studio Visits: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “The Standard Rendez-vous” @ Zidoun & Bossuyt

AM recently stopped by the new studio space of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed). The Brooklyn-based artist was busy getting ready for his solo exhibition at Luxembourg’s Zidoun & Bossuyt that opened yesterday. It was great to see Matsu focusing more on larger paintings and also the return of his abstract “sundance” style that we’ve come to love. The exhibition runs from October 3rd until November 9th, so stop by if you’re in the area. Discuss Matsu here.

Streets: Os Gemeos x Mark Bode (San Francisco)

After Os Gemeos stopped by Los Angeles to promote their collaboration with Hennessy on a new bottle design, they headed up north to paint some public art in the Bay Area. One of the murals they got up was a joint effort with the San Fran-based Mark Bode. Featuring one of the twins signature yellow-skinned character riding Bode’s father’s Cheech Wizard, the piece can be seen on the back of the Warfield Theatre near 6th and Market Street. Structures: Alex Chinneck – “From the Knees of My Nose to the Belly of My Toes”

British designer Alex Chinneck has made over the facade of an abandoned building in Margate, England which he entitled From the Knees of My Nose to the Belly of My Toes. The project brings to mind the Dalston House by Leandro Erlich which we shared with your earlier this year and has the same whimsical feel to it. Openings: Amy Sol – “Incantation” @ CHG Circa

Last month, AM stopped by the opening of Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo show at CHG Circa entitled Incantation. As the name of the exhibition suggestions, many of the new paintings were thematically tied to the idea of magic. Hush For TAO Downtown (New York)

Over the weekend, TAO held a monster party to launch their new location at the Maritime Hotel in Chelsea, their second New York location. Over the course of four weeks leading up to the grand opening, the UK-based Hush’s (interviewed) was asked to create multiple large-scale installations for the mega-clubrestaurant, essentially guiding the design of the interiors thematically with is his east meats west urban aesthetic and the geisha girls that have populated his works of late. Our friends over at Toy Qube have been quietly working on a project that will bring to life a painting by Josh Keyes (interviewed). We finally got the go ahead to share some detailed images with you. Entitled Lifted II, this meticulously sculpted piece is a three dimensional creation based on the painting we recently showed you from his last exhibition at Roq La Rue. Last week, the MOCA in Los Angeles held a release party for OUTSIDE THE LINES: An Artists’ Coloring Book for Giant Imaginations, a publication curated by Souris Hong-Porretta (seen directly below). Many of the animators, cartoonists, fine artists, graphic artists, illustrators, musicians, outsider artists, photographers, street artists, and video game artists made it out to the event to interact with fans and sign copies. Just this Friday night, Dutch painter Joram Roukes opened his solo show at the B15 Gallery in Copenhagen entitled Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness.
