Streets: Natalia Rak (Poland)

Last week in Poland, Natalia Rak painted a new mural for the Folk on the Street 2013 event. Playing with ideas of scale, the clever piece features a girl watering a small plant or tree depending on your perspective and can be found on the side of the Institute of Chemistry building at the University of Bialystok. Take a closer look at the mural in the photos below… Via Street Art Utopia.

Showing: Mark Dean Veca – “Year of the Snake” @ SiTE:LAB (ArtPrize)

The Los Angeles-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) recently traveled to Michigan to create an installation for this year’s ArtPrize competition. The site-specific immersive installation entitled Year of the Snake transforms the Grand Hall of the old Public Museum of Grand Rapids with his signature imagery. The concept behind the work featuring a printed vinyl floor and hand-painted walls is a riff on this year’s Chinese Zodiac and that fact that the space is actually going through a transformation, like the shedding of a snake’s skin. For those interested, head over here […]

Openings: Jeremiah Ketner – “Ideal World” @ myplasticheart

Last month, myplasticheart in New York hosted a solo show from Jeremiah Ketner (interviewed) entitled Ideal World. The new body of work featured the feel good imagery typically seen from the Chicago-based artist painted in bright colors. Ketner’s female and fairy-like characters frolic and play in a tranquil natural world full of flowers, vines, and gardens – certainly one artist’s interpretation of utopia. Openings: L’Atlas & Canto – “PARALLELS” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented new works from L’Atlas & Canto collectively entitled PARALLELS. Aptly named, the exhibition not only refers the nationality of the two French artists, but the similarities in their aesthetic that both involve abstraction, precise patterning, and geometric tendencies. The series of paintings and installations they produced do pair nicely when viewed together and certainly show that the two have come far since their time on the streets. We were particularly impressed with the additional three-dimensional elements of Canto’s work and […]

Korean artist Yu Jinyoung (interviewed) recently opened her first solo show in Italy at Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan. Focused on feelings of isolation and insecurity […]

Studio Visit / Previews: Sail – “Dead Language” @ Roq La Rue

This author had the pleasure of interviewing Sail in 2012 for his personal blog, but a lot has changed for the Seattle based artist since then. Shortly after his personal website launched in late 2012, he caught the eye of Kirsten Anderson, owner and curator of Roq la Rue. He soon found his name on the artist list for the I’ll Love You Until the End of the World group show. His work was well received, and after ThreeA Publishing released his book in their GOYA series, […]

Opening: Ed Templeton – “A Gentle Collison” @ Jerome Zodo Contemporary

The corner of Via Lambro and Via Melzo in Milan was packed with urban art lovers and skateboarders that wanted to meet and greet legendary Ed Templeton on the night of 19th of September. The American skateboarder and artist was there to open his latest solo show A Gentle Collison at  Jerome Zodo Contemporary. While some just wanted to meet the man, others wanted their Toy Machine boards and shirts signed or doodled on, but all of them were here in the first place to enjoy his latest body of work. For […]

Openings: Augustine Kofie – “Structurally Sound” @ White Walls

Over the weekend, the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco presented new urban abstractions from Augustine Kofie. Entitled Structurally Sound, the new works continued the Los Angeles-based artist’s post graffiti aesthetic with thoughts of “sound structures and systems of reliability” when creating the paintings. Rounding things out was an installation that highlighted some of the sketches and in-progress ideas that lead up to the exhibition. Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion.
