Openings: Kevin Earl Taylor – “Monument Adrift” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery played host to a new show from Kevin Earl Taylor entitled Monument Adrift. The exhibition feature his landscapes that include various creatures which are almost treated architecturally in some instances, placed on pedestals, incorporated into decaying structures, or portrayed as building blocks. Berkeley based artist Mario Wagner builds his worlds to incorporate a level of cinematic intrigue through the retro futurist sci-fi imagery that speaks to the era from which he draws reference – a time when futuristic fascination was widespread, space travel was imminent, and the possibilities of technology were limitless. The German born artist uses analog methods of collage incorporating vintage print media alongside painted elements. SDCC ’13: Robert Williams – “The Rapacious Wheel”

Those lucky enough to attend SDCC last week and and weekend may have feasted their eyes on a new sculptural piece from Robert Williams. The Rapacious Wheel (made in collaboration with Gentle Giant Studios) dominated the area where the Juxtapoz founder held his daily signings and screened his documentary. FriendsWithYou Installation For Hyundai

Last time FriendsWithYou gifted Asia with an installation, it was in Hong Kong (2012) with an inflatable bouncing creation featuring some of their signature happy-go-lucky characters. This time around, Happy Gift was a 25-feet wide piece, commissioned by the Hyundai, which was publicly exhibited during the month of May at the Hyundai Department Gardens in Seoul. Brett Amory – “Twenty-Four in New York” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last month, AM attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (featured) new solo show entitled Twenty-Four in New York. For his second showing at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (alongside POSE & REVOK), the SF-based artist continued his series of works documenting various locations in selected cities, all in one hour increments. Rounding out the paintings, were the display of found objects at the spots he featured as well as a site-specific installation which incorporated a magazine stand with structural components. Releases: Audrey Kawasaki x Pressure Printing – “Eien”

For those who missed Audrey Kawasaki’s (interviewed) sold out print release from Pressure Printing five years ago, here is your chance at the companion print. Entitled Eien, which in Japanese translates to “forever,” “eternity,” or “permanence,” the new limited edition (run of 50) sized at 8 ¾” × 12 ¾” will cost you $1500 and comes in hand built walnut frames. The print, which is hand embellished by Audrey in pink pencil, will be available for sale at noon PDT on Tuesday, July 23rd 2013. Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here.

Earlier this month, we brought you shots from the studio of Jen Stark as she prepped works for her current show at Cooper Cole in Toronto. Vortextural continues her continued exploration of papercut sculptures as she brings novel new shapes and forms to her oeuvre with an accompanying refining of her craftsmanship. Each piece reflects her fascination with color theory and draws heavily from her interest in mathematics, leaving a viewer mesmerized by what is in front of them. Openings: Sylvia Ji – “Interwoven” @ FFDG

San Francisco native and now Los Angeles-based painter, Sylvia Ji, opened her solo show Interwoven at Fecal Face Dot Gallery last Friday evening. The show featured new paintings on wood that feature traditional patterns interwoven with The Day of the Dead motifs as well as expanding on her work with the female form incorporating similar elements.
