Openings: Pose & Revok – “Uphill Both Ways” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

MSK members Pose and Revok (pictured above with gallerist Levine) recently visited New York City and immediately made their mark by being the current artists to work on the highly visible Bowery & Houston Mural (here & here). They also came into town to premiere respective new bodies of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The tandem exhibition (curated by Roger Gastman) was a breath of fresh air from the graffiti-based fine artists. Entitled Uphill Both Ways, the show’s name was inspired by the late graffiti artist & […]

Lucien Smith – “Scrap Metal” @ Bill Brady KC

One of the most highly-regarded artists currently under the age of 30, Lucien Smith is a name whose work people (and institutions) have been paying much attention to since he graduated Cooper Union. The NY-based youngster has kept a busy schedule in 2013 and while we await his Sept. exhibition at Salon 94 that is set to open in a few months, his explosive second show this year is currently up at Bill Brady KC. There are a few paintings that surround the installation, interacting […]

Streets: Revok x POSE on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

In part one of our behind the scenes coverage on the creative process of the new mural, we showed you the relentless work ethic of both Revok and POSE. It was interesting to see the first time two artists with different approaches were tasked with creating a work of art on display for the people of New York at the historic Bowery & Houston wall. Taking over six days, this piece was finally completed and it turned out wonderful as the text concept and end product reflected […]

It was a giant step for mankind when Buzz Aldrin first stepped on the moon and now, another big step has occurred in the career of KAWS as he was tapped to re-design this year’s MTV VMA “Moonman” trophy. His iconic work is continuing to hit the mainstream, especially after his inflatable companion was revealed in last year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. Now the 2013 winners of the VMA’s, set to be held for the first time at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, will receive a prize from the locally […]

Studio Visits: Jen Stark – ‘Vortextural’ @ Cooper Cole

AM recently had the pleasure to visit the studio of multi-disciplinary artist Jen Stark as she prepares for her debut solo show in Canada tonight (6-10 pm) with Cooper Cole in Toronto. The LA-based artist’s process is meticulous and her studio is very well organized with numerous projects coming to life simultaneously. Instantly recognizable as her own, Stark’s work is rich in color theory and draws heavily from her interest in mathematics, deep space and the natural world. Take a glimpse below at her new […]

Streets: RIME (New York)

It’s been a while since we featured an in-depth look (see 2012) at one of RIME’s street pieces here on AM. It’s not for lack of material as the prolific artist otherwise known as Jersey Joe travels constantly putting up work around the world. This newest piece in New York featuring his signature mix of letters and gritty cartoonish characters was painted in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge. Also, check out an associated video and interview with RIME by the Village Voice where he covers […]

Streets: Liu Bolin (New York)

It looks like Chinese artist Liu Bolin was back in New York again recently since the last time he was in the Big Apple when we hung out with him and JR as they worked on an interesting collaborative project together. While in town for his current exhibition at Eli Klein Fine Art, site of his show in 2012 (covered), the photographer and painter decided to stop by 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center, in an area of Queens which has heavy graffiti presence. The walls there will soon be replaced […]
