Openings: “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

Over the weekend, AM stopped by the Orange County Musuem of Art to take a look at the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial that just opened, in particular Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) installation. Along with some paintings he submitted, the Los Angeles-based artist also painted a room with his signature patterns and added some interesting adornments. Openings: A New Sculpturalism @ MOCA Geffen

Opening last week at MOCA’s Geffen location was A New Sculpturalism, a show that examines the work of thirty-eight major and emerging practices in contemporary Los Angeles architecture of the past twenty-five years. Well-known legends represented in the show include Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, and Eric Owen Moss, while younger architects, such as Elena Manferdini (Atelier Manferdini), Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich (P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S), and Tom Wiscombe (Tom Wiscombe Design) show off their abilities with three full-scale built projects, or pavilions. Leandro Erlich – “Dalston House” (London)

Argentinean artist Leandro Erlich has unleashed another interactive installation in a vacant lot on Ashwin Street in East London as part of Beyond Barbican. Known for his art pieces that often stretches the viewer’s mind with unexpected optical illusions, this particular one entitled Dalston House utilizes a modality he has tried before. Last week, Eleven Rivington (11 Rivington Street location) unveiled a new body of work from Brooklyn-based artist Israel Lund. This intriguing exhibition showcases Lund’s interesting viewpoint and technique. His creative process often starts as an image of nothing, which he then repeatedly silkscreens and forces ink onto the null area. He then manipulates the image by enlarging, degrading or distorting it systematically thus eventually creating something out of nothing. Studio Visits / Previews: Brett Amory – “Twenty-Four in New York” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

As a followup to his showing last year, Twenty-Four in San Francisco, Brett Amory (featured) brings this conceptual vision to the East Coast. Amory filmed 40 locations throughout the five boroughs of New York, each in a one-hour increment at all hours of the day and night. Showing: Bäst – “SEAFOAM” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Currently showing at the Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton through July 2nd is a new exhibition from Bäst. SEAFOAM features the NY-based street artist’s gritty paintings, mixed-media, and sculptural works, many of which use found materials from his home shores of Coney Island. The pieces for this solo feature his characteristic use of layering and collaging (with bits and pieces of advertisements and magazines) as well as display his re-occuring predilection for the use of many eyes in his portraiture. Galerie Patricia Dorfmann recently opened Mark Jenkins’ (interviewed) first solo show in Paris, introducing his newest body of work titled The Studio. James Turrell – “Akhob” @ Loius Vuitton City Center (Las Vegas)

James Turrell, who just opened his first exhibition in a New York museum since 1980 over the weekend at the Guggenheim, also has an interesting project in Las Vegas. The American artist, whose work deals with light, color, and space, has created a permanent installation, Akhob, at the Louis Vuitton at City Center, (on the fourth floor which can be seen by appointment only). Reviving a longstanding collaborative relationship with the fashion house, the room floods your retina with high pigment fields of light. Via Hyperallergic.
