Streets: Life Is Beautiful 2016 (Las Vegas)

For this year’s Life Is Beautiful arts and music festival, JUSTKIDS / Charlotte Dutoit once again put together a worthy roster to add their unique talents to the outdoor vistas of downtown Las Vegas. We initially shared Bezt from Etam Cru’s piece with you a couple days ago, but other artists for 2016 included Shepard Fairey, Dulk, Tristan Eaton, Crystal Wagner, Amanda Parer, Martin Whatson, Mark Drew, Justin Favela, Fafi, and Felipe Pantone who created an amazing mural with added 3D elements (seen above). Take a look at photos of all […]

Openings: Ryan Hewett – ‘Order’ @ Unit London

South African artist Ryan Hewett (interviewed) has returned to London for a new solo show at The Unit London entitled Order featuring a new series of expressive and semi-abstract portraits. Depicted figures include himself as well as Egon Schiele, Marcel Duchamp, Lucien Freud, Samuel Beckett, and Audrey Hepburn. Unlike his 2015 solo show Untitled in which he created deliberately chaotic and semi-abstract portraits of famous figures, the new body of work is more planned and focused with abstract strokes and a textured pasto technique. Streets: Bezt // Etam Cru – “The Sleeping Knight” (Las Vegas)

Last week in Las Vegas, Bezt from Etam Cru painted a lovely new mural entitled The Sleeping Knight for the Life Is Beautiful Festival. Curated by JUSTKIDS, artists from all over the world came to leave their mark on Sin City including one half of the Polish street art duo. Painting a boy asleep in church juxtaposed by the stain glass image of a knight in armor slaying a dragon, one can almost imagine the dream he must be having. Discuss Etam Cru here. Streets: Cleon Peterson // Nuit Blanche Paris @ Eiffel Tower

Following in the footsteps of Shepard Fairey (featured) of creating art at the Eiffel Tower (covered), Cleon Peterson has done something Mr. Obey has never had the opportunity to do – painting the first mural ever directly below the famed monument. Created for this year’s Nuit Blanche in Paris (organized by Palais de Tokyo), the piece is entitled Endless Sleep, a reference to the famous late-night cultural festival. The circular piece features the Los Angeles-based artist’s signature figures inspired by Greco-Roman frescos sans the usual provocative imagery. Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

Showing: Ugo Rondinone – “the sun at 4pm” @ Gladstone Gallery

Currently at Gladstone Gallery in New York at their 21st Street location, a show entitled the sun at 4pm is on view, the latest solo from Ugo Rondinone. The part for the exhibition that may be of interest to our readers are the indoor sculptures that mirror his Seven Magic Mountains installation currently on display on the outskirts of Las Vegas (covered). These vibrant multicolored balanced rock formations from the Swiss artist are what comprises the “mountain” portion of his “mountain, sun, waterfall, and cloud” series of works included in […]

Streets: Ai Weiwei – “Reframe” @ Palazzo Strozzi (Florence)

Over the weekend, Ai Weiwei unveiled a provocative new installation on the facade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence which continues his commentary on the current refugee crisis in Europe. Entitled Reframe, the Chinese artist’s latest public work will features 22 life rafts attached to the historic building’s windows, a striking critique of the handling of the humanitarian crisis. Inside, an exhibition entitled Libero will be Italy’s first major retrospective of the dissident – artist’s work including “key monumental installations, sculptures and objects, as well as videos and photography series […]

Showing: Todd James – “We Are One” @ Galería Javier López

On the 15th of September, Galería Javier López & Fer Francés opened a new show by Todd James entitled We Are One. For his third show in six years with the Madrid gallery, the NYC-based artist painted a new body of work that reflect his views of the times we live in. The title of the show is the American artist’s sarcastic commentary about the current state of the world – while the majority of people support peace, unity and tolerance, the world is full of terrorism, wars, injustice and wrongdoing. Everything from popular culture to global […]

Streets: Crystal Wagner // UNIQA Art Lodz (Poland)

Following up on an amazing collaboration between Etam Cru and Robert Proch in Poland, Crystal Wagner was the next artist invited in by UNIQA Art Lodz to beautify the city. The new installation (created from wire armature, rip-stop water proof and UV protective nylon, cable ties) for the urban art program curated by Michał Bieżyński (of Lodz Murals) is entitled Hyperbolic and looks like it’s devouring the building. The site specific installation is located on Piotrkowska Street (the city center of Lodz) and will be on view for at least three months. Wagner further adds – […]

Streets: Nuart 2016 Murals (Part II)

The 16th edition of Nuart Festival brought some of the most popular street and urban artists to Stavanger, invited creatives that usually don’t work in public as well as few names that already participated in the festival years ago. Here is part II of our final recap (see part I here) of Nuart 2016 and the murals, public works and interventions created in the last couple of weeks. One of the highlights this year was surely Robert Montgomery with the conceptual, poetic pieces that have been shown at the […]

Recap: Kidult – “Visual Rape” Pop Up Show (Tokyo)

Provocative graffiti artist Kidult recently held a 48 hour pop show in Tokyo entitled Visual Rape. The French artist who made his name tagging his moniker on the storefront of famous fashion brands, particularly those who use graffiti commercially, made sure to include a reference to his notoriety with sculptures (two editions) of Chanel’s tagged facade in the exhibition. Rounding out the eclectic exhibition were mixed media works, installations, sculptures, and some videos documenting his work on the streets. Photo credit: Arthur Bray/Hypebeast. Discuss Kidult here.
