Interviews / Previews: Jacub Gagnon – “Elements & Oddities” @ Thinkspace

This month sees Toronto based artist Jacub Gagnon bring his surrealist still life paintings to Los Angeles for his solo exhibition entitled Elements & Oddities. The exhibition opens at Thinkspace on Saturday April 30th, and also features Yosuke Ueno. Lowbrow pop master David MacDowell (interviewed) returns the Culver City showspace also in the project room space with Lowbrow Love Letter. Streets: Phlegm – “The Harnessing of Giant Squids”

Phlegm, who recently completed the Black/Light project in London, has been active on the streets recently. Take a look at this sweet mural completed near a riverbank entitled The Harnessing of Giant Squids featuring some of his signature characters wrestling with their catch. The piece will photograph quite nicely when the winter water levels rise reminiscent of the Banksy Global Warming stencil in Camden. Although it was surprising Los Angeles did not get gifted any new Banksy pieces in the weeks leading up to the opening of the MOCA Art in the Streets exhibition, it looks like the anonymous street artist has produced a new piece in his native land. This stencil, which has not been confirmed on Mr. B’s website yet, appeared in central London over the Easter holiday and is in the same area where his famous One Nation Under CCTV used to be. UK-based street artist Ben Eine, who recently showed in SF (covered), made the trip down to Southern California soon after as we saw him at both the D*Face opening and of course participating at the Art in the Streets exhibition (covered) at the MOCA. Back during Art Basel Miami, we had the pleasure of visiting the Miami studio of Argentinian-born, Miami/NY-based artist Martin Oppel. Oppel, who has shown with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Miami and Paris amongst others, works in a wide range of mediums—including painting, sculpture and most recently photography—often focusing on the materials and the process of art, while also making work that is visually attractive and thought-provoking.
