Streets: Banksy in NY (Part II)

As we suspected after seeing the first couple pieces from Banksy in NY, he wasn’t done with the Big Apple yet. Looks like several other pieces have popped up in various locales such as Soho and Chinatown, although you’ll have to be quick if you want to see these in person as haters have been defacing them almost immediately. More images after the jump…

Interview: Zilda

French artist Zilda’s classically influenced street work are inspired by old books and works of the master painters and sculptors of the past. With such a wealth of material to refer to, it was somewhat surprising to find out that his work is all originally hand-painted. We talked about his history, technique, and future,  among other things in our interview – all after the jump.

Streets: Conor Harrington & Know Hope in Israel

So it turns out the mural we got a hint of earlier from Conor Harrington (interviewed) was in Israel. Looks like he teamed up with Know Hope to put up some pretty sick pieces. And it looks like he’s not done yet as he looks to tackle the Israel-Palestine wall. More pics after the jump…

Streets: Banksy in NY

After a whirlwind tour (summarized here) of North America to promote his film, Banksy has finally reached the one city that has been conspicuously missing from his itinerary – New York, the so-called birthplace of modern graffiti. Strange that the visit does not coincide with the actual movie premiere in NY several weeks ago, but with two stencils that have been discovered so far, there are bound to be more so stay tuned. The one above is a clever variant of the piece Mr. B […]

Studio Visits: Tom French

Tom French is a young artist whose work we’ve been enjoying for a little while. A regular contributor to group shows in and around London and the UK, we saw Tom’s fantastic “Cowboy Balance” series of works available at Urban Angel recently and got in touch to go take a look at his work for ourselves at his studio up in Newcastle, UK. Tom works predominantly in charcoal, but also uses acrylic, spraypaint, gold leafing and collaged paper to bring his dazzling urban realism compositions […]

Update: Gaia

Haven’t heard from Gaia in while ever since hanging out a little at Art Basel Miami last year, but it looks like he’s participating in two shows in the next couple weeks. First up is a solo at Gallery Heist opening tomorrow night in SF (of which there are some preview pics after the jump). Then, on May 23rd, he’ll be part of the Axis Alley Project in Baltimore for which he put up this sick mural of his “Deny Him Three Times” image – it blends […]

Streets: Banksy in Boston

If we were privy to Banksy’s flight itinerary the last several months, this is what we might have seen: UK – Utah – UK -> LA -> SF -> Chicago -> Detroit -> Toronto -> Boston or some combination thereof (strange that he skipped NY). How do we know? Well, he leaves a trail of stencils (of course, we will never know for sure unless they are confirmed). Some of readers may have had Banksy overload ever since his documentary came out at Sundance, but […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for this May 13 – 16

NYC is rocking it yet again this weekend – the big Charming Baker popup show, ROA continues to kill it in Brooklyn, Scott Musgrove returns to LeVine and the Willoughby Windows Project returns to the desolate storefronts of Brooklyn… the Big Apple is just on fire this weekend. Not to be outdone, the UK has the big ‘Art From The New World‘ show from Corey Helford Gallery rocking things up north at the Bristol City Museum and Gallery. Too much good stuff for one person […]
