Highlights: Recommended Openings for March 18 – March 20

Carmichael Gallery’s move to Culver City is the big news this weekend. With the debut North American solo show from Brazilian artist Nina Pandolfo “Life’s Flavor” serving as their debut exhibition, this proves to be a not to be missed event. Look for several shots of the show coming together after the jump, as well as a full breakdown of all the other shows keeping art lovers busy this weekend.

Studio Visits: Lola

Opening next Saturday, March 27th in Culver City will be Lola’s newest solo show – “Ipsum Factum” (teased) at the Corey Helford Gallery. AM lucky enough to be able to stop by her studio a while back to check on the progress on this new body of work. We are happy to report this new set of paintings are her most detailed yet, down to the pointy-toed goodness. Take a look at more pics after the jump…

Streets: Nick Walker – “Le Coran-can”

Nick Walker (interviewed) just threw up this sick stencil on Quai De Valmy in central Paris. The message is particularly timely because of Sarkozy’s attempts to prohibit the wearing of the burkha and it looks as though the government may be getting ready to ratify the ban. The piece is entitled “Le Coran-can,” perhaps a wordplay on Koran and the can-can?

Streets: Saber

Los Angeles-based graffiti artist Saber recently threw up a new mural on the corner of 7th and Mateo, showing he can get his street art on as well. The piece, part of the L.A. Freewalls Project (see D*Face’s contribution), features skyline imagery as well as what looks to be one of the legendary artist’s famous tags on one of the foreground walls. Streets: Hush Geisha

A few weeks ago we previewed Hush (interviewed) working on a new type of Geisha. One that was more detailed and more realistic. It looks like he’s out working on a larger version as a mural. Very interesting… Check out the in progress shots after the jump.

March came in with a bang last weekend and doesn’t let up as we head in the 2nd weekend of the month. Leading the charge are two gargantuan group shows. First up is the big “5 Year Anniversary Exhibit” from Hi-Fructose in Santa Monica, CA at Copro Gallery and the other is “Lush Life 2” up in Seattle, WA at Roq La Rue Gallery. Two of the longest standing galleries in our movement show their strength with stellar lineups that promise not to be missed. […]

Sketchbook: Banksy

Last summer, AM flew out to the UK and took a road trip up to Bristol to visit Banksy’s exhibition at the Bristol Museum. As we mentioned, Banksy made an installation that replicated his studio and in that brilliant space, we realized that he had numerous pages from his sketchbook. Streets: David Choe in LA

Looks like David Choe (featured) has been plastering the streets of Los Angeles in preparation for his solo show (teased) in the City of Angels at the end of April. “Nothing to Declare” will be put on by Lazarides in Beverly Hills in a special space and rumors are Choe’s show won’t be the only show hosted in that location before all is said and done. The AM crew will definitely be out in force for this one so look for more coverage to follow. […]

Update: Banksy vs. Robbo

Based on pictures from Robbo and his crew, it looks like they have gone and modified more Banksy pieces, warping their meanings. If you remember this all started in Camden with a stencil Banksy put up over a vintage Robbo tag, with the ensuing retaliation (here & here) from Robbo. Not sure how long the graffiti artists plans to continue defacing pieces from Banksy, but it seems a little much now… More images after the jump…
