Second Helpings: February 2010

February was a frigid month and many people fought furious snow storms in their part of the county. Fortunately, we at AM had a chance to warm you up with some hot stories on your computers. As usual, the staff picked some of the juiciest stories of the month in another edition of Second Helpings. Get served after the jump…

Streets: D*Face x Oscars

UK street artist D*Face (featured) recently stopped by Los Angeles to install some well-timed “Zombie Oscar Statues” last week. The two seven foot sculptures were installed in two locations – atop Runyon Canyon and in the parking lot of the famous Mel’s Drive-In in Hollywood near where the 82nd annual Academy Awards (Oscars) were being held at the Kodak Theatre. Our friend, Jeremy Kaplan (GM of Subliminal Projects) was along for the ride as D*Face worked his version Hollywood magic. The two installations were explained in detail […]

Openings: Rosson Crow – “Bowery Boys” @ Deitch Projects

On Saturday night, Deitch Projects hosted the opening for the ever talented contemporary artist: Rosson Crow. Her latest show “Bowery Boys” featured her talented nostalgic snapshots of the streets of lower Manhattan. The beautifully rendered works featured periods from the 1800’s to the current landscape depicting the gritty urban facades of the “Big Apple”. As AM previewed last week through a detailed studio visit, her bigger-than-life style had us excited to see the rest of the show. Fully utilizing the grand space that Deitch Projects is renowned […]

Streets: Below Las Vegas with Logan Hicks

Inspired by Matt O’Brien’s book “Beneath the Neon – Life and Death in the Las Vegas Tunnels”, Logan Hicks (interviewed) recently took an interesting look at the massive system of drainage tunnels underneath the city of sin. Portions of the more than 300 miles of subterranean passageways are covered in graffiti and the feel of the place kind of reminds us of the underground work of Brazilian street artist Zezao. More pics after the jump.

Preview: Aaron Nagel – “Marks” @ Shooting Gallery

Aaron Nagel opens his debut solo show in SF at The Shooting Gallery this Saturday, March 6th. The exhibition is entitled “Marks”, as in a target, a sign or indication of a quality or feeling, or a small area on a surface having a different color from its surroundings, typically one caused by accident or damage. According to the press release, the show is comprised of “11 new large-scale oil paintings, this series uses imagery of youthful women in the nude, often impaled by archery […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Rosson Crow – “Bowery Boys” @ Deitch Projects

This past weekend AM had a chance to stop by Rosson Crow’s Brooklyn studio where she graciously gave us a sneak preview of her upcoming Deitch Projects show “Bowery Boys” opening on March 4th. As the name implies, Rosson uses her loose and dreamy abstract style to reinterpret the landscape & culture of downtown Manhattan. Working within the storied hall/traditions of Deitch Projects, Rosson dares to nostalgically re-imagine the “bad boy” underground streets artists of yesteryear and their impact on the urban culture of NYC. Some of […]

Streets: Vhils in Moscow

Lazarides recently released some images of a piece that Vhils put up in Moscow, perhaps at the same time this piece was created. For more background info on how the Portugal-based street artist produces his “unbufferable” works of art with hammer and chisel, check out a video here. Also, more images of this piece after the jump…
