Studio Visits: Nate Frizzell

After hanging out with Nate Frizzell at Baby Tattooville, AM stopped by his studio last week to check out the progress for his show opening this weekend. Nate showed us some of the paintings and drawings for “Lost in the Thicket” opening at LeBasse Projects this Saturday, October 17th as well as hinted of a special installation that he will be working on for the show. We walked away impressed by the amount of detail and thought he put behind this new cohesive body of […]

Streets: Elbow-Toe

Elbow-Toe (interviewed) has been putting up consistently good work since his Black Rat Press show in July. His thoughtful and always meaningful work continues to impress us – this piece takes an old tale (the old woman who lived in a shoe) and puts a twist on it.  This seems to be a common theme in some his work as he likes to re-appropriate stories or images for completely different reasons. Take a look at his recent work after the jump, and make sure to […]

Baby Tattooville ’09 – Reverse Studio Visits – Elizabeth McGrath

On Saturday, Oct. 3rd, just an hour or so before the big KMNDZ reveal, Elizabeth a.k.a. Bloodbath Mcgrath held a reverse studio visit alongside Miss Mindy (more on that later) giving patrons an insight to her sculptural techniques. As an added bonus, Liz provided the Baby Tattooville guests with their own clay, allowing them to create their own personal mini works of art. Also on display were the hand cast cleavers that Liz so generously provided in every guest’s grab bag. More pictures after the […]

Interviews / Preview: Esao Andrews – “Farewell Avery” @ Thinkspace Gallery

It’s been a while since Esao Andrews has had a major show and for his many fans, it’s long overdue. Since his showing with Roq La Rue last May, he’s been relatively off the grid – most likely getting ready for this year’s show “Farewell Avery” at Thinkspace, opening TONIGHT. It seems like it has been time well spent because this new body of work took our breath away. Even though we teased you with a peak at “The Conjoined Bell”, we had no idea […]

Highlights: Recommended Openings For October 9-11

October is upon us and with it, an amazing array of shows – two in particular garnering the most press. The first is a show Adam Neate’s fans have been eagerly awaiting for over two years.  We had an opportunity to interview Neate recently and based on what we saw at the special preview night (full coverage to follow soon), he has definitely taken it to another level. The other event we want to draw your attention to is the Beyond Eden New Contemporary Art […]

Interviews: Eric White

Following on from our recent studio visit with Eric White, we put some questions to the Brooklyn based painter ahead of his New York solo show “LP” at Sloan Fine Art. AM thought that the concept he had behind the work was captivating – reworked album covers that carried an influence for the artist before he got his first CD player back in 1983 – all in a 12 inch square format, of course. This is Eric’s first NYC solo since the phenomenal “Who Are […]

Interviews: Adam Neate – “A New Understanding” @ Elms Lesters

Adam Neate’s second solo show, “A New Understanding” will be opening at Elms Lesters this Friday, October 9th.  From what we have seen from this body of work, it looks like Neate is really continuing to blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture with his use of found materials such as cardboard, metal and perspex.  In our exclusive interview, Neate discusses his upcoming show, which has been in the making for over two years, plus much more.  Full interview and preview images after the jump….

Studio Visits: Holly Thoburn

Our friend Frankie from Campbarbossa sent over some images from Holly Thoburn’s studio as she prepares for her joint show with Peter Michael.  Entitled “Metropolis,” the show opens on October 22nd at the Sesame Gallery in London.  For this new body of work, Thoburn will be painting derelict walls and abstract imagery inspired by her extensive travels and photographs of urban environments. More images after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’09: Art Jam

If the artists at Baby Tattooville are the heart of the event, then the “Art Jam” is definitely the bloodline that is pumping throughout the event. Starting at 5pm on the opening day and lasting a little past 8pm the next night, “Art Jam” is a culmination of the all the participating artist’s hard work. Like in previous years, the blank canvas was tinkered with by a few brave artists during the initial dinner, but by the time midnight rolled around, one could clearly see […]
