After witnessing David MacDowell’s wit and humor as well his acrylic skills firsthand at Thinkspace a short while back, we fast became fans of his work. But, his ballsy take on Robert Williams‘ classic “Appetite For Destruction” at the Crazy4Cult 3D show really blew our mind. Notice the seamless blending of the world of Willy Wonka with arguably one of the most famous paintings of lowbrow art culture. Streets: Imminent Disaster

We saw this image of an Imminent Disaster piece in progress today on Vandalog and were struck again by the complexity of her work and paper cutting skills. We first saw the intricacy of her work in person at the “Streets of Brooklyn” show in January and more recently at her dual show with Gaia at Ad Hoc Art, but nothing quite highlights the ephemerality of street art like seeing her delicate and time-consuming cutouts pasted on a decaying wall. Streets: Invader – “Low Fidelity” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

As expected, Invader took his time to visit buildings around the area with his tile work, coinciding with the opening of his solo at Lazarides (covered).Â From the look of these new London pieces, he seems to be transitioning to some larger scale work, perhaps making it harder for “collectors” to take them off the streets.Â Don’t know how long he is in town for or whether these went up before or after the opening but more and more seem to be popping up. One of the nicest murals we’ve seen put up in a while comes from Sydney (277 Parramatta Rd to be exact), where Anthony Lister (interviewed) painted over this large billboard. New Artist Focus: Tristram Lansdowne

The upcoming summer group show (teased/previewed) at Joshua Liner Gallery is packed with heavyweight artists with whom frequent AM readers will already be familiar, such as Dave Kinsey, Joe Sorren and Greg Simkins (interviewed). However, the show will likely be many people’s introduction to several up-and-coming young artists. One of those whom we are particularly interested in is Canadian painter Tristram Lansdowne. Last Friday, Chris Stain and Armsrock opened their two-person solo show “I Know There Is Love” at Ad Hoc Art. Their unique individual explorations of the hope and dignity found in everyday urban life while still maintaining the undertones of its challenges and despair paired together very nicely.
