Studio Visits: Femke Hiemstra

AM visited Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra in her home studio in Amsterdam shortly after relaunched her official website, Femtasia.nl, and the release of her latest book Timid Cabbage. We were intrigued to see how her impressive works take form, where she get the ideas for her unique pieces, and what her plans were for the coming year. Hiemstra’s art career started by chance, when her long time job as an illustrator for different Dutch publications got put on hold. This was a result of the ongoing recession and […]

Openings: “Infusion” @ Roq La Rue

Infusion at Roq la Rue opened on Thursday, March 6th to a packed audience. The show’s goal was to infuse the gallery with talent that had not been seen in the gallery previously.  Almost all of the artists in the show are new to the gallery and they didn’t take the opportunity lightly. From the life size Wedding Party by Rose Freymuth-Frazier, the grotesquely beautiful Blue Room by Jeff Jacobson (seen above), and Zachari Logan’s Blue Man 2, amazing levels of detail were brought, all with […]

Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Take a look at some more photos below… Discuss this show here.

Openings: John Brophy – “Breaking The Spell” & Femke Hiemstra – “The Timid Cabbage” Book Release @ Roq La Rue

While most were focused on the art bonanza in Miami, Roq La Rue favorites John Brophy and Femke Hiemstra, shared an open with new works at the Seattle gallery. John Brophy continues to hone his craft, mixing science symbology with religious iconography in Breaking The Spell. Added to the mix this time around are a few individual themes, like the world’s water supply in Oasis, and the companies that produce supergerms, which are literally slapped across a mesmerizing face in Birth of the Gram-Negative Venus. […]

Releases: Femke Hiemstra – “I Think of Thee When Far Away” Postcards Portfolio

PressurePrinting.com recently released a postcard portfolio from Dutch artist and illustrator, Femke Heimstra, just on time for her new website launch. Famous for her recognizable “anthropomorphic animals that  roam in a dark, fairytale like world, together with all sorts of characters”, she often paints with acrylics on old surfaces like antique panels or books. It was exactly this kind of work that the studio and the artist wanted to show with this release. This is her 2nd collaboration with Pressure Printing since the successful release of her intaglio […]

Openings: “I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World” @ Roq La Rue

The I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World group show opened at Roq La Rue this past Friday to a large crowd which simultaneously got to see some great art and escaped the freezing temperatures outside. The title of the show is based upon a Nick Cave song of the same name, which finds the protagonist just after a bomb blast rocks a hotel as he speeds away, thanking his girl continually in the chorus. While some of the artists rendered the lyrics in […]
