Right on the heels of the behind-the-scenes Sunflower Seeds video, a trailer for Ai Weiwei’s Never Sorry documentary has surfaced. This first full length feature on the Chinese artist and activist sheds light on some of his philosophies & principles and why he is admired by so many fans in and out of China. Videos: JR – “Women Are Heroes”

It looks like JR has uploaded more tantalizing extracts from his Women Are Heroes movie that debuted at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Part of the street photographer’s 28 Millimètres project, this film chronicles his efforts to bring attention to the plight of downtrodden women everywhere by pasting up large-scale photos in an urban setting (see Paris). Video: “Destricted” Trailer

The controversial collection of shorts entitled Destricted was recently released onto DVD. The US version which features famed artists like Richard Prince and Marilyn Minter as directors consists of an ongoing series of films that explore the line where art and pornography intersect. When the UK version was released in 2006, it won awards at a range of international film festivals including Cannes, but encountered some problems predictably getting released in the States until now. LA Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child

The film we heard first heard whispers of at Art Basel Miami last year is finally ready for its Los Angeles release tonight. Billed as the definitive documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat, “The Radiant Child” (trailer) was filmed by close friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988 after which she stored the footage away for almost 20 years. As we mentioned in a previous post, French photographer JR’s film “Women Are Heroes” has been selected for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. Bringing his project full circle, the movie documents his travels around the world photographing victimized and impoverished women and then pasting them up in their own neighborhoods and towns, sending a powerful message of hope and strength.
