Openings: Mr Freeze / ‘Lost & Found’ (Toulouse)

For the third year running (see 2014), the Mister Freeze exhibition opened recently and gathered over thirty national and international graffiti and street artists in Toulouse, France. Organised by Faute O Graff, the must-see event took place in the Cobalt building, a former industrial warehouse of 26,000 sq ft. Showing: Daniel Arsham – “Future Relic 3” @ Cannes Film Festival

American artist Daniel Arsham is presenting the third installment of his Future Relics series at the 68th Film Festival in Cannes. The short film features actress Juliette Lewis. In parallel to the screening, an exhibition entitled Future Relic 3 on display at the Club Albane at the Marriott, presenting relic items from the film industry era including film camera, microphones to videotapes all recreated in Arsham’s signature technique. Showing: Isaac Cordal – “Moments de solitude” @ Spacejunk

Last week, Spacejunk in Bayonne, France presented new works from Isaac Cordal in an exhibition entitled Moments de solitude. For this showing, the Brussel-based artist created installations for the indoor space that mirror the pieces he usually leaves in the streets. These sculptural interventions, which he calls Cement Eclipses, consist of tiny middle-aged men in suits who navigate dreary, oppressive environments pointing out the how we are slaves to consumerism, funded by lives of drudgery. Following in the footsteps of Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons, another worthy giant in the contemporary art world will be putting his works on display in the unique historic setting – Anish Kapoor. Visitors to Palace of Versailles between June to October next year will be greeted by the British sculptor’s famous shiny geometric objects among other works in the rooms and grounds of the 17th century chateau. London based abstract artist O.Two is currently in France painting a commissioned wall at a large concert venue in La Rochelle and he sent us along a few progress pictures of the piece coming together. The mural combines his typographically inclined abstract stylings with figurative elements – somewhat of a first for him. The Regional Museum of Contemporary Art in Sérignan, France is currently showing the nostalgic abstractions of Rosson Crow (featured). Featuring 25 large-scale paintings (old and new) from the American artist, the comprehensive exhibition, her largest ever, gives attendees a good look at the psychedelic modern take on decadent interiors from the past that have become her signature imagery. JR – “Women Are Heroes” Container Ship

Over the weekend, JR (interviewed) launched a pretty special project from Port of Le Havre, France – a 365 meter long container ship, the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, pasted with his iconic eye motif. Working on over 151 containers, the French artist used them as pixels to recreate the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi from his Women Are Heroes series of works. Starting Saturday (June 28th) in France, in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon in the town of Sérignan, the Regional Museum of Contemporary Art will be opening a show from Rosson Crow (featured). Showing through November 2nd, the exhibition will feature the young painter’s hallucinatory abstractions of decadent interior spaces, oftentimes embellished with elements more often seen in urban settings. This lends a modern twist to her work influenced by old world techniques, which leads to interesting juxtapositions. Discuss Rosson Crow here.

Thomas Canto recently created a futuristic installation inside of one of the rooms at the Vieux Panier Hotel in Marseilles. This small hotel is built in an old Corsican grocery shop, and it has five unique rooms, each designed in a different style by a contemporary artist for a period of one year. During 3 years the Crimes of Minds project invited local and international artists to create 21 murals across the city of Brest (France), transforming the city into an urban art museum (see previous coverage here).
