Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening of Futura’s show presented in conjunction with Valmorbida. Held at a sizable Meat Packing district cargo hold, the pop-up exhibition was the perfect location for one of the kings of the street to make a triumphant return to New York City. Boldly kicking off the art season and fashion week, the graffiti legend held nothing back as he presented a showing that was a true tour de force. As promised, AM visited Futura for a behind the scene’s look at upcoming his monster show in New York City. Presented in the same pop-up location in the meat-packing district at which Andy Valmorbida previously exhibited Retna, this massive body of work entitled Future-Shock is a proper homecoming for the New York graffiti legend. Something seemed a little different from our previous interactions with Mr. McGurr though. Perhaps this body of work may have driven him into another gear. Futura may live and work in New York City, but the graffiti legend hasn’t had a solo exhibition in his hometown for over 12 years. That’s all going to change as the artist formerly known as Futura 2000 will be unveiling a large and fresh body of work with Valmorbida (who have put on great shows in the past - here & here & here) come September 6th. Unlike many in the current trend of street art, he isn’t a novel flash in the pan - Leonard Hilton McGurr (aka. Futura) has always been relevant. Our friends at Complex put together a comprehensive write up on the [...]
Remember earlier this year when AM visited Paris to catch Futura 2000 launch his solo exhibition? Well, that wasn’t the end of his affiliation with the country known for some of the best wines and brandies in the world as Hennessy will continue their artist collaboration (see their KAWS bottle) with the graffiti legend. We’ll have a closer look at this amazing collaboration very soon… Photo thanks to Tabathammm. Discuss Futura here.
Over the weekend, Subliminal Projects brought in a power trio of graffiti legends in their show titled Three Kings. Featuring the work of Fab 5 Freddy, Futura 2000 and Lee Quinones, the show brought in writers who each have a different and unique style. Having these personalities under one space brought in fans of the artwork as well as those who wanted to finally meet the street luminaries. The artwork covering the walls ranged from Fab 5′s old-school type lettering layered against images of trains [...]
