Openings: Gary Baseman – “Mythical Homeland” @ Shulamit Gallery

Over the weekend, the Shulamit Gallery in Venice, California opened their doors to Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) Mythical Homeland. Dominating the showspace was a birch forest installation that had photographs, drawings, and paintings hung throughout which references the experiences the LA-based artist’s father went through as a freedom fighter hiding from the Nazis (also illustrated in a recent music video with Die Antwoord). Releases: “OUTSIDE THE LINES” Coloring Book @ MOCA

Last week, the MOCA in Los Angeles held a release party for OUTSIDE THE LINES: An Artists’ Coloring Book for Giant Imaginations, a publication curated by Souris Hong-Porretta (seen directly below). Many of the animators, cartoonists, fine artists, graphic artists, illustrators, musicians, outsider artists, photographers, street artists, and video game artists made it out to the event to interact with fans and sign copies. Releases: Gary Baseman – “Guest” Figure @ Lladró Boutique (Beverly Hills)

Tomorrow night in Beverly Hills (June 19th 6-8pm), the Lladró Boutique will be holding a release party for the Gary Baseman (interviewed) designed version of their Guest porcelain figure. Videos: Gary Baseman X Die Antwoord – “Buckingham Warrior” on MOCAtv

MOCAtv just released their newest video Buckingham Warrior, a tale inspired by Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) father who survived the holocaust. Ben Baseman fought the Nazi invasion in Ukraine’s birch tree forests for almost four years and this new music video (animated by Peter Markowski and scored by South-African duo Die Antwoord) tells his story in his son’s signature imagery. This was created in association with Gary’s current exhibition, The Door Is Always Open (covered) at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Discuss Gary Baseman here.

It was a night to remember. Last week, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles opened its doors to an extensive survey of Gary Baseman’s career and life entitled The Door Is Always Open. Openings: Gary Baseman – “Nightmares of Halloween Past” @ KK Gallery

Over the weekend, the newly opened KK Gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown Arts District held the opening reception for Gary Baseman’s (featured) latest solo show. Entitled Nightmares of Halloween Past, the exhibition featured appropriately themed paintings,  the LA-based artist’s vintage Halloween photo collection, a performance by Nightmare and The Cat, a ghostly chandelier, and of course a costume for the man of the hour. Set Up / Preview: Gary Baseman – “Nightmares of Halloween Past” @ KK Gallery

This Saturday, October 20th, the KK Gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown Arts District will be holding their debut show featuring Gary Baseman’s  (featured) Nightmares of Halloween Past. The new body of work is an ode to Baseman’s favorite holiday and includes a series of haunting original paintings, special edition prints, installations and videos. Openings: “MiXTAPE LA” @ Lebasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last night, the Chinatown location of LeBasse Projects hosted Mixtape Los Angeles, a group show curated by by Jessicka Adams and Brian Wakil of Dark Dark Science with part of the proceeds going to Downtown Dog Rescue and Stray Cat Alliance. Twenty four artists created pieces that explored “the effect of music on the process of creation” including Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Baseman, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Matthew Bone, Melissa Haslam, Tara McPherson, Tim Biskup and more.
