Showing: Kelsey Brookes – “Plants Of The Gods” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Currently in the Hamptons, at Eric Firestone Gallery, the San Diego-based Kelsey Brookes has a series of works on display that continue his abstract exploration of molecular structures. Moving on from painting colorful artistic interpretations of neurotransmitters (here, here & here), the former biochemist has turned his attention to naturally occurring hallucinogenic botanical compounds – Muscimol, Ergoline, Scopolamine and Ibogaine – Plants Of The Gods. The renderings mirror the psychedelic effect of the subject matter with what interestingly starts out as “precise locations of individual atoms, which then expand and radiate […]

Recap: Colin Christian – “Cosplay” @ Vered Gallery

Over the weekend, Vered Gallery opened a new showing from Colin Christian (interviewed) entitled Cosplay, a fitting name collectively for the new selection of sculptures and for his work in general. The London-born and now Florida-based artist creates mostly comely female figures out of fiberglass and silicone, an natural offshoot of his artistic vision while operating a business initially making latex clothing for fetish stores around the country. As indicated by the name of the exhibition, he costumes his creations, often taking inspiration from “old sci-fi movies, pinup […]

Showing: “Positivilly Marvillainous” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton is currently hosting the Positivilly Marvillainous group show, a title borrowed from the smart word play of George Herriman, the creator of the Krazy Kat comic. The power of comics and cartoons, and the way they represent characters and tell the story is the main theme of the show. The idea that “still, simple and sophisticated characters tell our stories better than a complicated plot,” resulted in an exhibition that champion the character itself. The show features works by established and up and […]

Karma’s Hamptons location in Amagansett, NY, currently has an exhibition by artists and friends Leo Fitzpatrick and Nate Lowman. The show, entitled Art Relax, features a wide range of collaborative mixed-medium works—mostly collage on paper, but also painting, sculpture and installation. Art Relax closes July 1.

Openings: Sam Moyer / Mika Tajima and Graham Collins @ Halsey McKay

Over the weekend, we drove out to East Hampton to check out the two current shows at Halsey McKay. On the gallery’s ground floor is a two-person exhibition by Sam Moyer and Mika Tajima (seen above) entitled Midori Mambo Black Russian. Moyer contributed several framed black and white painted glass and dyed canvas works resembling abstracted seascapes, which were nicely juxtaposed with Tajima’s colorful and glossy paintings (technically “reverse spray enameled thermoformed acrylic objects”). Upstairs, the gallery presented a solo show by Graham Collins, entitled V8. […]

The pieces for this solo feature his characteristic use of layering and collaging (with bits and pieces of advertisements and magazines) as well as display his re-occuring predilection for the use of many eyes in his portraiture. Take a look at more photos we took below, including […]

Over this past weekend, San Francisco-based artist Andrew Schoultz visited the Hamptons at Eric Firestone Gallery to unveil a new body of work consisting of his remixed flags. Entitled Exo Uno Plura, the show explores the kinetic compositions referencing the political turmoil in the nation. Further pushing his skills, Andrew told us he worked and weathered the flags to age them. Unlike the fully coated gold flag he recently displayed in City of Fire, Mr. Schoultz this time plays with the dripping and coloration to escalate his commentary […]
