POW! WOW! Hawaii ’17 / Showing: Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Showing in associated POW! WOW! Hawaii through the tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art School is the 4th annual Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Artists were asked to contribute 12 x 12″ pieces leading to a visually conforming display of works. Rounding things out was a showcase for Shok-1 (seen below) and a Homer Simpson x Banksy parody installation by Oak Oak (seen above). This Sunday, POW! WOW! Hawaii (more info here) kicks off with a re-occurring show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014). As in the past, the format is 12 x 12″ works, leading to a visually congruent display of artworks, some of which were inspired by island life. Upcoming: POW! WOW! Hawaii 2017

POW! WOW! Hawaii will be making its return for 2017 with a new roster of artists (international and local) as well as fresh new programming and art shows. Running from February 11th to the 18th, the festival will features live painting of public murals and installation mainly in the Kaka’ako neighborhood along with a block party alongside the Honolulu Night Market, an exhibition curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art, a print show with Detroit-based 1xRun, artist talks, Saving Banksy documentary premiere, “Art to the Pitch” […]

Streets: Kamea Hadar – “Hapa” (Hawaii)

Recently in Honolulu, Kamea Hadar unveiled a mural honoring Barack Obama, a former resident of Hawaii, for his service as the 44th President of the United States. The locally-based painter and also co-lead director of POW! WOW! Hawaii, entitled the mural Hapa, a reference to both the POTUS and artist’s mixed heritage. After a look (here & here) at most of the murals painted for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, we now focus in on some of the work for the event that you may have missed. Created on a miniature level by Slinkachu, the tiny sculptures were scattered and hidden in plain site around Oahu, including underneath some of the muralists, leading to some interesting collaborations. Starting this week, artists have been hard at work painting murals for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii. Beautifying the streets of Kaka’ako in Oahu with their imagery, the participants get to enjoy the tropical weather and throngs of fans as they leave their mark at the annual event. Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014).
