Openings: Herakut + aptART – “Displaced Thoughts” @ Urban Nation HQ

On Saturday, May 16th, Herakut and aptART opened an exclusive show at the studio and work space of Urban Nation in Berlin, presenting a collection of paintings, photographs and installations created both by German art duo and individuals & organizations across the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Displaced Thoughts is a show that was hugely influenced by Herakut’s visit to a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan in March last year. The fact that an estimated 51.2 million people were forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, […]

Streets: World Roundup (May 1 – May 20)

It’s been few months without our Streets World Roundup feature, but it seems like the season for street art festival has arrived, so the only way to cover some of it is to do a group report on some of the most important murals worldwide. Tahiti once again hosted the ONO’U festival and this year’s lineup included such names as DALeast, Faith47, Seth Globepainter (who teamed up with local artist HTJ), ROA, Dabs Myla, and Pose. The south hemisphere street art scene was active once again in Dunedin […]

POW! WOW! Hawaii ’15: Recap Videos

With this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) behind us, here is a look back in video form of some of what took place. Also included below are some related videos of this year’s event. Discuss POW! WOW! Hawaii here.

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Akut

Working on a slightly smaller section of the same wall as Doze Green (more on this later), Akut from Herakut, finished his large piece for POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) after 3-4 long days of work. Usually working as a part of duo, German-based artist had to find a way to paint this large piece by himself. This situation also inspired him to create an image of a wrestling toy man, feeding a small baby through a bottle completed with the text “my real challenges were outside of the […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Mural Overview (Part I)

At 10am on Monday, Feb 9th, the mural painting part of POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 officially begun with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony at the Lana Lane headquarters in Kaka’ako in Honolulu. After the ceremony, the artists picked up their paint and needed equipment and started working on their designated walls. With 100+ international and local artist in attendance, this years event crossed the borders of Kaka’ako district. And while some artists were painting over freshly buffed walls from previous years, the others were creating works at new […]

Streets: World Roundup (Oct 13 – Jan 12)

During the winter months, we typically see a slowdown of street activity due to the colder weather. After a brief hiatus, our Streets: World Roundup feature returns with a summary of the intervening months. Leading things off is this Invader (who has a new website) piece that is seen in a new light in the wake of the tragic events that went down recently in the French artist’s home base (photo by tofz4u). Other notable walls come from ROA – Germany (source), Herakut – USA, […]

Rewind: Sept 8 – Sept 21

There seems to be an unlimited supply of art-related videos coming out all the time. Here is another edition our Rewind feature where we curate a selection of videos for your viewing pleasure. First up is some footage of Spanish muralist Aryz, who has been very active lately participating in most European street art festivals with big walls. Finerats Magazine recently featured him on their cover and also just released a great 11 min interview giving us a great, previously unseen look inside his studio, but also, […]

Showing: Herakut – “Flaw Circus” @ Ruttkowski;68

German art duo, Herakut, recently opened their solo show Flaw Circus at Ruttkowski;68 Gallery in Cologne, on the 29th of August. Only a few months after working on projects in Syria and North Jordan, Hera and Akut put together a show that speaks to the social & political issues around the globe and the way they’ve experienced them. Influenced by graffiti and street art culture, their visual language is a emotive mixture of everything from text and handwriting, expressive sketch-like elements, surrealist scenery and characters, to almost photo realistic […]

Streets: World Roundup (Aug 4 – Aug 24)

With the return of our Streets: World Roundup feature, we first want to bring your attention to a new mural from Blu in Sardinia, Italy. The wall he painted once again showed his skills with large-scale imagery while working around architectural features of his surface. Also, the upside down toy soldiers are consistent with the Italian street artist’s penchant for politically charged public works. Other worthy walls come from Ernest Zacharevic – US, Satone – Germany, Seth – Puerto Rico, Bordalo II – Portugal (source), […]
