Viewpoints / Openings: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

AM was at Tony’s Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday to see the first UK solo show by Olek (set-up and teaser photos here). The New York-based artist has been making the most of her extended London visit, transforming the ground floor of the gallery into a domestic setting filled with crocheted furniture and other household items. Everything but the entrance area, the ceiling, and a couple of plants has been given a second skin. The combination of brightly-coloured yarn and Olek’s signature camouflage pattern means [...]

Setup / Giveaway: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

Olek is launching her first UK solo show this evening at Tony’s Gallery in East London. The wall-to-floor installation recreates living quarters, complete with bed, tables, picture frames and other domestic objects — all covered in brightly-coloured crochet. AM has been keeping track of progress over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result. The show’s title, “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone”, quotes from an appliquéd blanket produced by Tracey [...]

Closings: Tim Biskup – “Gravity’s Migraine” @ The Standard (Hollywood)

On Tuesday, The Standard Hotel in Hollywood frequent collaborator Tim Biskup (featured) for the closing of his most recent installation titled Gravity’s Migraine. We had recently posted some pics of the glass vitrine space and front lobby, but went back to catch the end of the feature and to get a firsthand look with Tim. The see through cube which sits behind the hotel’s reception desk featured a woman inside the space which brings to the forefront issues of voyeurism and  the lack of privacy. However, Biskup [...]

As part of her Look Now, See Forever exhibition (more on this later) that opened last month at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, Yayoi Kusama included an immersive installation piece that encompass an entire room dubbed The Obliteration Room. What began as a completely whited-out setting (furniture included), ended up covered by thousands of her signature dots – aided by placement of colorful stickers by children who visited the exhibition over the course of two weeks. Before and after pics after the jump…

After returning from Miami and the festivities of Art Basel Week, Tim Biskup (featured) headed over to The Standard Hotel in Hollywood to work on a new project. For his second stint as the designer of the installation at the glass vitrine space (see his first here) behind the front desk, Tim decided to utilize his signature pixelated motif in the background wall and foreground glass as well as some abstract twining hangings scattered about the hotel lobby all centered on the theme of an upside [...]

AM Ai Weiwei bicycles Taiwan Absent TFAM 01

Showing: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part II)

In Part I of our visit to Taiwan to catch Ai Weiwei’s exhibition Absent at the TFAM, we gave you a look at the impressive sampling of the Chinese artist’s works from the early 80s to present day. Of course, AWW isn’t a man that rests on his laurels as he’s constantly looking at life from his unique artistic viewpoint, which brings us to his Forever Bicycles installation, a unique and completely new work created especially for the Taiwan museum. This sculptural piece puts together 1,000 [...]

Streets: Faile Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

AM was recently onsite to bring you Faile breaking ground at the prominent Houston & Bowery mural (before they headed to London for their solo). As you saw in Part I, the basic foundation of the work was a ginormous collage featuring much of the classic imagery created by the collective (both new & old). In an effort to dodge the crazy weather and rain, the two Patrick’s worked morning to night without assistance to wheatpaste the base of their work. After day one, the efforts paid off [...]
