The Oakland Museum of California is currently showing Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California, which is an exhibition focused on the “histories and social forces that changed the face of art in—and beyond—the Golden State.” The show includes early influnces by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in San Francisco in the 1930s, all the way to the vibrant new Mission scene from the 1990s through the present, including Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, and Amy Franceschini. Laboratório de Actividades Criativas in Lagos, Portgual, is currently has an group exhibition on view which resulted after their ARTURb 2014 project. Streets: Tom Fruin’s Stained Glass House @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

As a followup to his stained glass watchtower in 2012 (covered), Tom Fruin created a new installation last month at the Brooklyn Bridge Park for the Dumbo Arts Festival. Entitled Kolonihavehus, the house created from plexiglass was a hit with visitors during the day and at night, although it was particularly stunning lit up once the sun went down. Temporarily inhabited by duo CoreAct, attendees of the event were able to see the art structure enhanced by a collaborative physical performance. Via Colossal.

Openings: D*Face – “Scars & Stripes” (Los Angeles)

Over the weekend, AM headed out to Los Angeles to check out a solo from D*Face (interviewed) at a popup location in West Hollywood (315 S. Robertson Blvd). Greeted by an installation featuring a giant D*Dog sculpture crushing a police cruiser with full on smoke, fans were hyped up to enter the gallery space to take in a new body work from the British street artist. Phlegm – Market Traders Installation (Sheffield)

After putting together an elaborate installation and mural for the Royal Opera House in London (covered), Phlegm used a similar technique for a project further up north. The site-specific work was created in his home city at the Sheffield Bazaar as part of the Festival of the Mind. Housed in one of the oldest parts of the city, the scene set up shows Phlegm’s characters interacting in an old school marketplace setting. Check out more detail shots below… Photo credit: Ladoza. UK-based artist Phlegm has just finished an outdoor installation (which will be on display until September 28) at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden. Last week, the Nuart Festival in Norway continued its long run of excellence with the 2014 lineup of street artists in town for indoor and outdoor works. INSA for G9 Restaurant (Shanghai)

Artists who have have been featured here on AM continue to be viable options for restaurants that want a distinctive interior for their customers. Several months ago, INSA was in Shanghai where he oversaw the completion of his collaboration with Architect INDJ on the decor of G九上海 (G9 Shanghai).
