Vancouver-based artist Jeff Depner opened his debut New York solo exhibition last week at Nancy Margolis Gallery. Variations: Black Napkins showcases Depner’s intense application process where he places multiple layers of paint amidst an equal amount of reductive processes to build up his compositions. His hard edged forms have an organic feel amongst the highly stylized architectural notions he presents. Geometric configurations wrestle with natural elements in his paintings, where colour theory underpins his architectonic aesthetic. Depner is renowned for his highly graphical, abstract compositions and his use of layers, textures, colour and repetition of geometric elements create a visual feast. Earlier this month, the Buddy System Invitational (curated by Sven Davis) opened at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The group exhibition centered on the interesting concept having each of the 22 invited artists bring along a fellow artist to exhibit alongside them with each contributing one 16 x 20″ & one 8 x 8″ artwork. Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. Moving on from our recent studio view, and drilling further down into the creative process of the artists involved in the upcoming Space//Form exhibition, we now bring you an insight to how the above piece entitled “Soft- Serve” was created by Vancouver based artist Jeff Depner.
