Jonathan Chapline recently unveiled a unique exhibition entitled Virtual Window, which was staged at the Hawkins Ferry House, built to display the namesake’s collection of modern art on the shores of Lake St. Clair. Last week in Tokyo, NANZUKA hosted the first solo showcase in Asia by the Brooklyn-based Jonathan Chapline featuring 10 new paintings and two three-dimensional works. Utilizing a combination of computer based skills and traditional mark making, the American artist has populated his paintings with increasing clusters of his signature croquis drawing-like characters, a process of quickly sketching the human body, distilling it to the simplest elements. Material Memory, a solo show from Jonathan Chapline opened last week at The Hole in New York City. Set against an eye-catching floor-to-ceiling gridded out gallery space, the Brooklyn-based artist’s digital aesthetics are perfectly accentuated by the Tron-like backdrop. This Thursday, October 11th, The Hole in NYC will be opening a new show from Jonathan Chapline. Entitled Material Memory, the exhibition will highlight the Brooklyn-based artist’s melding of digital and traditional techniques to create pieces with a unique aesthetic. Each work typically begins with some simple line drawings which he then fleshes out on the computer into more complex compositions with shading and color gradients.
