Upcoming: Jose Parla – “Mirrors” @ Brand New Gallery (Milan)

Coming up on September 21st, Jose Parla will be opening a solo show in Milan at Brand New Gallery that reflects on memories from his travels in Italy. Entitled Mirrors, the new work incorporates parts of posters ripped from off the walls of Milan, Rome, Napoli, Matera, Bari, Lecce and Bologna. This collage technique will add further depth and texture to the Brooklyn-based artist’s signature urban calligraphy, as well as re-contextualizes the found materials. Discuss Jose Parla here.

Previews: Jose Parla – “Roots” @ SCAD Museum

As we mentioned when we covered Jose Parla’s show at YoungArts during Basel Week Miami, the work was going to travel to the SCAD Museum of Art in 2017. That exhibition, entitled Roots, opened today in Georgia at the Savannah College of Art and Design with works ranging from mid-sized canvases and sculptures to large-scale paintings. The Cuban-American artist has created a series of work that represent everything from Cuba’s history to his personal memories and experiences while utilizing his signature textures, urban calligraphy, and palette. Basel Week Miami ’16: Pulse Art Fair

This year’s edition of the Pulse Art Fair at Indian Beach Park once again proved the reputation of the fair as one of the worthy satellite fairs of Basel Week Miami. Including over 70 galleries and their 200 artists, the fair featured new works from galleries all the way from Colombia, Spain, China to Japan. Another must-see show to add to your Basel Week Miami itinerary is Jose Parla’s site specific installation at the YoungArts Jewel Box (2100 Biscayne Boulevard). Entitled Roots, the commissioned paintings and sculpture are part of the Rolls-Royce art program and will see the Brooklyn-based Cuban-American artist’s return to the locale of his formative years in the 1980s and early 90s. Showing: Jose Parla – “Instincts” @ The Goss-Michael Foundation

Heading into the final days (thru November 11th) at the The Goss-Michael Foundation is Instincts from Jose Parla, the inaugural exhibition at the new smaller and more focused space on Wycliff Ave in Dallas. The new site-specific pieces from the Cuban-American artist are richly textured, heavily influenced (as is his practice) by the gritty and decaying walls on the streets with layers and layers of calligraphic gestures. Utilizing intense colors and free flowing script, the paintings and sculptures speak to the Brooklyn-based artist’s “creative instinct,” the overarching theme of the new body of work. […]

Upcoming: Jose Parla – “Instincts” @ The Goss-Michael Foundation

On September 29th, The Goss-Michael Foundation will be presenting the inaugural solo exhibition at their gallery on Wycliff Avenue in Dallas, Texas. Instincts from Jose Parla will feature new series of paintings and sculptures that continue the Cuban-American’s street-inspired calligraphic and textured works that have become his signature.
