Last night, OHWOW gallery presented Jose Parla’s new body of work titled Character Gestures, which predictably drew much of the art community out in support and to take in a rare LA exhibition from the urban painter and calligraphist. With a landmark exhibition at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, entitled Walls, Diaries, and Paintings (covered), just a couple months back in New York, José Parlá will look to parlay his creative juices on the West Coast with a showing this fall at OHWOW’s new Los Angeles space. Saturday night, Martha Cooper (interviewed) launched a special group exhibition at LA’s Carmichael Gallery. If the upcoming Art In The Streets Exhibition at the MOCA is this year’s Superbowl for street & urban art, then consider this show the preceding playoffs. Many of the players in the monster retrospective made an appearance to pay homage to the godmother of street art photography. Capping off an awesome Armory week opening at Bryce Wolkowitz, José Parlá & Standard New York held an intimate signing for the hometown fans. Held at the exclusive Boom Boom Room roof top lounge, fans enjoyed breathtaking views while they hung out at “José’s corner”. Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion.
